Once upon a time, a little girl named Mary Beth found herself caught in the pre-Christmas swirl of activity, all of which seemed to be coming to a head on Christmas Eve. Her dad was always scurrying about, loaded down with bundles and burdens. Her mom, under the pressure of getting ready for the great occasion, had succumbed to tears several times during the day. The little girl tried to help her weary parents, but always found that she was in the way.
“Not now, Mary Beth! Can’t you see I’m busy!” her parents would say.
Finally, near tears herself, she was hustled off to bed. There kneeling to pray the Lord’s Prayer, her heart and tongue became intertwined, “Forgive us our Christmases as we forgive those who Christmas against us.”
Perhaps Mary Beth’s prayer was not such a great mistake after all. Many times, we leave Christ out of Christmas. Many times, our Christmas spirit is not of good will but of exhaustion, causing us to trample on our loved ones’ feelings. And many times, we are so busy planning the birthday celebration that we forget to invite the guest of honor.
Imagine for a moment, that you have never heard the Christmas story, and you visit a shopping mall on December 22. You listen to the music being played over the intercom system and eavesdrop on a few shoppers’ conversations. Next, you stop by a greeting card shop and browse through the rows and rows of red and green envelopes with cards sporting colorful and comical messages. Window displays grab your attention, enticing you with promises of low prices for the last-minute shoppers. Stress laden faces rush by carrying stacks of boxes in various shapes and sizes. What conclusions would you draw about the event that culminates on December 25?
Much has changed since the God of the universe decorated the night sky with the star of Bethlehem and directed the choir of angels in a chorus announcing the birth of Our Savior, Jesus Christ. But the commercialism doesn’t have to rule in our hearts and homes. This year let’s focus on the Christ Child and remember the true meaning of the holiday season. As we turn our eyes to the Babe in the manger, we will not view Christmas as a dreaded obligation or a major retail event. It will be a time of joyous celebration, honoring the One Who came to give us eternal life and worshipping our Heavenly Father.
Rather than imagining ourselves at the mall, let’s imagine ourselves in the fields with the Shepards on that starry night recorded in Luke 2.
“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.’
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” (Luke 2:8-15 NIV)
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given…” (Isaiah 9:6 NIV). Let’s fill our hearts with JOY today, thinking of all God has done for us!
Let’s Pray
Dear God, sometimes I get too caught in the Christmas commercialism. OK, a lot of times. Today, I’m going to refocus my heart and remember why I’m celebrating this wonderful day in the first place. I’m celebrating Jesus today…and every day! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

One way that I choose to keep Jesus Christ as the center and focus of the season is to take time out to analyze and reflect on the Christmas Story during December—the month of Advent—and regularly song my favorite Christian-based Christian hymns.
We read the Christmas story as a family on Christmas Eve. When my kids were still at home we made a birthday cake for Jesus.
I try to remember that celebrating Jesus birth is not something we limit to the Christmas season. Every day is a time to celebrate what He did for us when He came to earth as a human as the ultimate sacrifice.
Jesus is the reason for the season, always and all days. I have stopped saying “Happy Holidays”, the holiday is about celebrating the birth of Christ, and therefore should be stated accordingly. His birth and ultimately, his death gave us the gift of life everlasting. His gift to us is greater than anything….
We always remember the advent candles and on Christmas morning we read the story of Jesus birth and pray before we open presents.
Placing the Creche in the living room in an area where it can be seen when you first walk in the door, as well as being viewed entering from other rooms. This year our priest blessed all the bay Jesus during mass. We also read daily Advent devotionals as well attending penance and healing services.
We gather around the tree on Christmas morning and read the Christmas story before opening presents. This focuses our attention on the true meaning of Christmas.
I love this! We’ve always focus on Jesus Christmas Eve, but I think we will add your tradition this year! Thanks for sharing!
I have a Box with the baby Jesus in it. It is the first gift that we open om Christmas, It is called
Christmas Presence
I received a Christmas present it came without a bow, it wasn’t wrapped with glitter, but in my heart I know it is the greatest present I will receive, because it is my Savior in whom I can believe.
He lives within my heart now and everything has changed, when I am in His Presence. I know I’m not the same.
Of all the lovely gifts beneath the Christmas tree. His Presence is the present that means the most to me.
We open this the gift we open first.
I always decorate my tree with some ornament bulbs that reminds me of the true meaning of Christmas which is celebrating Jesus birth! So everytime I look at my beautiful decorated true with my ornaments dedicated to the birth of Jesus it reminds me of the importance of putting Jesus first & foremost in my life, always. Also, to continue to give him all the glory, honor & praise, because he’s so worthy to be praised! 🙏🏾🫶🏽👏🏽🌲🎄
During the 7 days before Christmas, we wrote notes of thankfulness and prayers to Jesus (we called them “Jesus Notes”. I kept a small basket of Christmas themed note paper on the kitchen counter. The notes were folded and placed in a “Jesus stocking”, until Christmas morning. After reading the Bible and prayer, we would each reach into the stocking and take turns reading the notes. We saved the especially touching ones each year. At the end, we would read those, as well. We called those ones, Blast to the Past Notes!
My Prayer Tree
After my husband passed away 13 years ago, in December (The LORD gives, He takes away, Blessed be His name.) But the LORD also gives back! People forget that. Since my husband’s passing 13 grandchildren have been born, one of them a great grandson. As a retired Head Start teacher my life is very full giving care to my grandchildren. One Christmas I fashioned a Prayer Tree out of iridescent stars with each one’s name. I decided to leave it up all year, a great reminder to pray for them, and a great reminder of Jesus’ blessings in my life.
My children are all grown now, but when they were little I chose not to pretend with them that Santa Claus is real… I took this opportunity to talk to them about Jesus Being the REAL reason for the season and that Santa was just a pretend story about Christmas but he could still be fun to sing about, color pictures of and watch movies and shows about his character but he still wasn’t real. Then there never had to come a day that they found out that I fibbed to them about Santa being real but had still enjoyed things about him while growing up!! Kelly
