Struggling Together in Prayer

Sharon JaynesPrayer 219 Comments

I was in the restroom touching up my makeup before speaking to several hundred women. When I looked in the mirror, thoughts began swirling in my mind. What am I doing here? What do I possibly have to say to these women that could make any difference in their lives? I am not capable of walking to that podium tonight.

While I was mulling over the lies of the enemy telling me I wasn’t good enough, my cell phone rang.

“Hi Sharon. This is Mary. Where are you?”

“Actually, I’m standing in the restroom getting ready speak to a group of women and I forgot to turn my cell phone off!”

“I want you to know God interrupted me while I was cooking dinner and told me to pray for you,” Mary continued.  “Not only that, He told me to call you and tell you I was praying.”

I was imagining Mary standing in her kitchen with spaghetti sauce simmering on the stove and stopping mid-stir. There might have been a little conversation with God that went something like this:

God: Call Sharon and pray for her.

Mary: Could you just wait a minute God? The sauce is almost done.

God: Call Sharon and pray for her.

Mary: OK, OK, I’ll do it now.

There was great power in Mary’s instant obedience. If she had waited, I would not have known that she was praying. Not only did God prompt her to pray at that moment, He wanted her to tell me she was doing so. Why? God knew that there was power in her prayer, and He wanted me to know that I was not going into battle alone.

He had called Mary to “struggle with me,” to “strive together in battle,” to lock arms with me and march into victory.

I am so glad God gave us friends who will struggle with us in prayer. Paul wrote, “Dear brothers and sisters, I urge you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to join in my struggle by praying to God for me” (Romans 15:30 NLT).

The New Testament was originally written in Greek and sometimes looking at the original definitions of the words can give us great insight. The Greek word Paul uses for struggle in Romans 15:30 is sunagonizomai, which means “to struggle in company of, i.e., to be a partner (assistant), strive together with.”

Prayer for another person is not simply a nice platitude or a pat on the back. I’ll be honest, when I’m having a difficult time and someone says, “I’m thinking about you” or “I’m sending positive thoughts your way,” I don’t feel encouraged. I don’t need happy thoughts sent my way. I need prayers sent God’s way!

When we tell someone that we will pray for them we are agreeing to put on the armor and head to the front lines of battle on their behalf. We are locking our shields and making our appeals with other warriors on someone else’s behalf.

Many ancient shields had brackets attached to the sides. These brackets were a type of latch that soldiers used to lock shields during battle. When the shields were locked together, the soldiers moved as one force, forming a barricade against the enemy.

Alone, the shield was a small defense. Together they formed a human wall. Do you see the significance? When we lock arms in prayer with others, we are locking our shields together and forming a powerfully strong fortress of defense.

I’d like to pray for you right now!

Heavenly Father, I thank you for my friend reading this devotion today. I pray that You will give her the strength she needs for the battle she faces. Fill her with Your Holy Spirit. Give her the power and provision to take her stand against the schemes of the enemy. Open her eyes to see that You are surrounding the trouble that is surrounding her. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Let’s link shields and pray for each other today. Leave a comment and tell one of your greatest prayer needs. You don’t need to give a lot of details. God knows them all. It might be a just name. Then spend some time praying for your sisters.

  2. Prayer on how to open myself up to knowing our lord. How to establish an authentic relationship with him. Thank you.

    1. Your journey has already begun by taking the first step by asking others to surround you my friend, God knows you and sees you struggling but he will bring peace and enlightenment. Just ask him to take over while you rest in him.

    2. I am praying for you Courtney! I pray that you will find a wonderful Bible teaching church and a women’s Bible Study group where you can grow in faith and your relationship with the Lord.

    3. Transforming Bible study (that’s free) – Back to the Garden – at braveheart.run. It has changed me…there just aren’t words. I pray you look into it.

    4. wow father, one of your daughters is asking for an authentic relationship. she wants to get out of head space and get into heart space. you said in your word, in Jesus prayer, “that we may know you”. Courtney wants to know you, not know OF you, but she wants experiential knowledge and a deep relationship with you. break up every fallow ground, break up anything that surrounding her heart and not allowing the Holy spirit to burst through, any pre conceived idea of who you are, let those thoughts die, and allow your Holy Spirit to penetrate and lead. Give her a plan. you said in your word that we should present our plans to the Lord. Thank you for her and we speak faith that her request, which is from her heart, will happen. She will open up herself, she will die to herself; she will seek your face and you will indeed provide the help and encouragement and discipleship she needs from other believers. thank you for courtney. in Jesus name, AMEN

  3. I have a prayer request. Please pray for my youngest son, Matt. He has really gone astray. He has gotten in trouble several times and is living for self and has hurt several family members souls. Pray God would soften his heart and give him a desire to follow Jesus and ask for forgiveness, from God and others. I also pray he would return to being a kind, thoughtful person. Thank you for your prayers! 🙏

    1. Praying for you, Amy and for your son Matt. God tells us that His word will not return void.. “train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it. “ keep the prayers coming. God is faith and will never leave you nor forsake..

    2. Prayers for Matt
Prayers for the power of prayer for all those who have commented today- God loves you ❤️

    3. Amy, I can feel your distress, as my youngest son(also Matt) has been estranged for almost 7 years and has hurt his family members too. I pray that our precious Lord Jesus will soften Matt’s heart that he will accept our God’s grace and repent of his ways. I know that our Lord will welcome him into His loving arms and that you will too.
I’m praying for your Matt. Please pray for my Matt too.
In the wonderful name of Jesus.

    4. Praying for your prodigal! God knows your heart’s desire! Trust Him! I understand your pain, as I had a prodigal so as well. Keep praying boldly.

  4. I need prayers to find my purpose . I’ve lost a husband to cancer and a boyfriend to cancer . I had started another relationship but it’s ended and I feel so alone . I drink alone some and I know that I shouldn’t ! Please pray for me to have strength and direction ! Thank you .
Also for my 3 sons who have addictions !

    1. Pam as part of the 3sons club I feel your pain. I can’t imagine what that was like to have two men in your life die from cancer. And you are finding yourself without a partner to share your life with. I hope you know you are never alone. Ask Jesus to fill your void with His love, so much so that it may spill out to others. Especially your sons who need you more than you know, praying for you and your boys.

    3. Praying for you, Pam. You may not have a man as a partner right now, but you are not alone. God is within you and your constant companion. Next time you are drawn to drink, fight back and pick up your Bible and allow God to fill that void. We are with you. You got this!!

    4. Praying for you Pam and that you will use God’s love instead of alcohol or any others to fill your void. Reach out to Him, read His word!

    5. Pam, I so understand. Grief is a hard burden to bear! I lost my daughter to suicide, my grandson to murder, and my beloved husband of 45 years, to cancer, in a 3 year period of time! If I had not had God in my life, I’m not sure where I would be now, but he was always with me. I truly walked through the valley, but I did not walk alone. I was never angry with God because He taught me so much during this. None of us are exempt from life’s trials. After all, He never promised safety for the body, just for the soul!

It has been 14 years since this all happened and I now use it as my testimony to let people know that I am still standing and living for God. He has seen me though. I truly understand about the drinking and the addiction of your sons, and I pray that you will find the strength from God to stand strong in this.

I give my testimony anywhere that I run into people and listen to what they have to say. I spoke with a lady working in Walmart the other day, who suddenly told me that she had lost her husband in October, and I told her that I had lost my 10 years ago. She said please don’t tell me that it will get any better. I said I’m not going to say that because I don’t know that it does get any better, because it changes your entire life, but this I can tell you, with God by your side, it becomes a little softer around the edges to enable you to endure it.

God bless you in your journey and I will be praying for you.

  5. Knowing others are praying for you is very comforting. I need prayers for help in not always assuming my husband has misplaced or thrown away something of mine when I can’t find it. He has dementia and has been guilty of this, but he’s not always at fault when I have accused him of it and I later find where I have moved an item.

    1. Heavenly father, first of all, let Melody know she is surrounded by your love and care. Help her to give grace to her husband during this time of struggle in their lives. And help her to know you are there with her during every moment of her day. Give her the courage and encouragement to be kind, especially when it’s hardest. Amen.

Melody, my father had Alzheimer’s, and would throw his hearing aids away. Eventually, if my mom couldn’t find them, she would look in the waste baskets! I feel for you, I will continue to pray for you. God bless you!

  6. I pray that my adult children and grandchildren would turn to the Lord and have a relationship with Him. Thank you Sharon for your encouraging words.

    1. Philann,

I pray this daily for my adult children and my grandchildren. I will add yours into the prayers for mine.

  7. Thank you for the prayer. Your posts are very encouraging. Prayers go up for you and your family.. Pray for me that I may learn to trust in the Lord more as I had a difficult time trusting in people as I grew up. Then I learned that I could trust Almighty God. He is pealing away the walls I have built up. Pray that I see His will and that I obey.

  8. I could really use prayers for several areas in my life. I was laid off at the end of January this year and have had no luck in finding new employment. Prayer for my husbands release from prison, we have a pending pardon that’s just been sitting on the Governor’s desk awaiting his approval. Prays for financial increase as without my job, my bills has been mounting high. Prayers for spiritual breakthrough as I’ve been struggling in my faith walk and would love to find a church home where I can worship.

  9. Prayer for my husband, my marriage, and future marriages of my 3 girls after seeing so much dysfunction and disrespectful behavior in my marriage. I pray they do not follow the same pattern of behavior in their marriages. I pray God would truly be at the center of their marriages from the beginning and throughout until completion.

    1. Jayne, I pray that your daughters come to God’s saving grace and then come home to you. My son Matt walked away from us almost 7 years ago and I still pray and cry for him every morning. I will add your 2 daughters to my prayers.
I understand how painful it is, but our children are in God’s hands and we have to trust Him that He will answer our prayers in His time.
Our God is a God of hope.

  10. Please pray for my parents as my dad is in a nursing home trying to get stronger to come home and for my mom who is at home waiting for him to come home.

  11. Asking the Lord to strengthen and bless you too! Your books and devotionals are a great blessing to me. I particularly enjoy “Praying for Your Husband “ as it helps me stay scripture focused in prayer for him and is a useful tool in praying for anyone.

please look at Provers 16: 1, 3, 9. The Lord released this to me as I was praying for his help with weight loss. i was in such despair because its such a roller coaster, up 25 pounds, down 15, down 5 then up 10. He told me that I keep doing things without presenting them to him so that he could establish and show me what is best for me. i did that, i presented my plan to the Lord and supernaturally, It his power and help that I sense in my life right now. I just wanted to share that with you.
May he surround you with those who understand your struggle and can encourage you as you and the Lord plan and establish your steps to a healthy weight.

I will continue to keep u in prayer Sister. 🙏🏾💕

Fast forward to today, God sent us to a sweet little church that we absolutely love. Please pray that God will continue to move in our lives and that we grow closer to Him each day.

  42. Good morning everyone. Please pray for me as I struggle growing older alone. Yes, I do have family; however, they live their own lives. I’m single, never married and have no children (by choice). I love life and people and get so much joy in practicing random acts of kindness anonymously. Honestly, it’s what gets me through a lot of weeks. My biggest fear is growing old and never experiencing love. I’ll pray for you all as well.

  43. Hello all of you beautiful sisters!!!!
Sometimes, when we are struggling, God can feel very far away. Our pastor told me that when this happens, God, obviously, has not moved. He is there, He will never abandon you.
He said to look for him in His word, through worship, and through the hands and feet of his people. If you do not belong to a Bible teaching church, go find one right now! You need your brothers and sisters in Christ!

I prayed over each one of you on this message board this morning, sweet sisters, and I’m so grateful for devotions like this that remind us that God has empowered us through prayer in the name of His Son Jesus.

Today look around and see what beauty and wonder the Lord has made for us and thank Him! There is great joy in Thanksgiving!

And if you would, would you please pray for the salvation of my father Graham and my brother Robert?

    You are all loved 🙂

  44. Please pray for me and my children. We are in a horrible custody modification. I feel helpless against the lies of the enemy that the judge assigned to the case is believing and refusing to accept evidence to support the truth. Please pray that the truth will be revealed. This has been going on for 4 years and I am bankrupt and the trial isn’t until January 2026. Please pray God will continue to provide the financial support for me to see this to the end.

Prayer that I have confidence in sharing His word and not be fearful. Amen

    1. Sandy I let my cat Vittoria whom I have had as a faithful companion return home to her Creator. My husband and I moved to FL almost 3 years ago. Within 7 months he took sick and collapsed on the driveway from a massive stroke. Vittoria was just as upset as I was.

It was a difficult decision and I spent more money trying everything I could but she was suffering and had stomach cancer. My vet was not going to put a 17 1/2 year old cat under anesthesia. I have her ashes. Last week I distinctly heard a Meow at 4 in the morning. I know it was Vittoria letting me know she is home.
I will keep you in prayer Sandy!

  60. Please pray for my granddaughter Kaylie to soften her heart about things of God and to give her a hunger to want more.

  61. Prayers please for a home for my 7 1/2 month pregnant daughter. Either need a place to go or favor on a loan for the place we have been for almost 3 yrs. Moved from our home to here to take care of aging parents. Mom died, dad in rehabilitation and its been one struggle after another. Struggling in the wait….

  62. I need your prayers to find a new place to live, a working car plus a remote job & equipment to do the job. Thank you.

  63. There’s so much to be thankful for, I struggle with asking anything for/about myself. Who am I to deserve more than the many blessings already given? But here I am, well into life and realizing I’ve never truly known the all encompassing peace that only God can give. Please pray for me as I try forgiving myself for not believing I am worthy or being still long enough to hear and receive my Heavenly Father’s guidance – i need clarity in the direction for my life, and strength to wade through the murky waters to find my way and purpose, and the fortitude to recognize, know, and accept whatever that is – so that I may finally receive and know HIS peace. 🙏
I have loving friends and family – but I ache deeply. I’m so lonely and ashamed to admit how lost I feel, and so very tired from trying to figure out where or who I’m meant to be😔 ..please God come rescue me.🙏

  71. I have several family members who are very liberal and they will not discuss salvation so I am afraid for their souls. Please pray for all unsaved persons that we may be a light that helps them find their way to the Lord

  72. I would appreciate prayer for myself and my marriage. I am 68 years old and needed to separate from my husband last April due to emotional/mental abuse and to give my body space to heal from the stress-induced stomach issues I was dealing with (I had been in the ER 2x). I need wisdom on what to do next. Three years ago, God led me on a journey that ended with identifying narcissistic behaviors regarding my husband; I’ve also come to realized this has been my “normal” throughout my lifetime so I didn’t “get it” throughout our 23+ yrs of marriage. I’m learning to set boundaries instead of explaining/defending myself. I’m simply overwhelmed with life, but know the certainty of God’s love for me and that He sees me! Thanks for praying…

    1. Praying for you Joyce & I’m in the same boat as you. I didn’t get it either as I had it my whole life, plus 3.5 decades of marriage. You can separate & leave. Hope that you will. One step at a time. Write down your plans & contact a lawyer. Find a place to stay. If you can’t leave, can you do in house separation? In separate rooms? That’s what I’ve done for now until my next step. Yes it does affect you physically. I’ve been in ER twice too. We’ve got this & God knows/sees all. You’re doing the right things. ✝️🙏🏻

I have no friends. I am 70 years old.
Prayers for my brothers and sisters to open the eyes of their hearts and talk to me again, I need my family and I love them so much.

I need to find a job as soon as possible, but it needs to be the right fit and a salary that will cover my expenses. Please pray that God will not only heal me, but provide for me as well.
Thank you all for your prayers.

    1. Demetria, I had a similar season of this in my own life. It was truly anguishing. However, in that time, God rested, healed, delivered, and taught me many things. I am now a new, more free person that I was before it. He helped me overcome and transform.

Praying a verse over you that meant a lot to me in that season…

Lord Jesus, please have mercy on your daughter, Paula. She needs you.

I ask that you would help her resolve any trauma or built up emotions that haven’t been dealt with.

If this is spiritual attack, I rebuke the enemy in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and command him to leave her, praying the blood of Jesus over Paula.

I pray that you would teach her how to have her mind governed by the Spirit which is life and peace and not the flesh which is death (Rom. 8:6).

Fill her up with the word of God which renews the mind and remind her of Your love. In fact, would you show her it in a tangible, personal way today.
