Prayer Can Change a Person’s Heart

We had a lot of prayer happening in the comment section of last week’s devotion. So today, let me share a story about the power of prayer in one family’s life.

Allan was a tough man. Raised by a single mom with five siblings, he learned how to scrap his way through life and climb to the top of humanity’s heap through sheer determination and grit.

He married at nineteen, had his first son at twenty, then a baby girl at twenty-five. Over the next two decades he advanced from driving a delivery truck at a lumberyard to becoming part owner of a building supply company.

Allan drank heavily, fought with his wife verbally and physically, and terrorized his children emotionally. He gambled, dabbled in pornography, and had questionable relationships laced with a host of unsavory vices.

But when his teenage daughter gave her life to Jesus and began praying for her family, God grabbed the chisel of grace and began chipping away at Allan’s proud heart of stone. One day he told her, “I’ll go to church with you from time to time, but I could never become a Christian. I’ve done too many horrible things in my life. God could never forgive me. I could never be good enough.”

His daughter explained that no one could ever be good enough. If we could, then Jesus wouldn’t have had to die on the cross to pay for our sins. But Allan couldn’t wrap his mind around that kind of grace.

When Allan was forty-six years old, his life took several hairpin troublesome turns. Because of a business deal gone terribly wrong, he was sued for breach of contract and breaking a no compete clause with a former employer.

Allan teetered on the brink of a nervous breakdown. From man’s perspective, it appeared he was on the verge of losing it all. From God’s perspective, Allan was right where he needed to be.

It was that year that Allan met a Christian man, a pastor, who had done everything he had done, and yet knew the forgiveness of Jesus. Through this man, Allan gave his life to Christ.

The way Allan later explained what happened that day was this: “That man had done everything I had done. I knew that if God could forgive him and he could be a pastor, then He could forgive me too.”

Allan was my dad.

From my earliest years as a Christian, I experienced the power of prayer to change a man’s life—to strengthen a man’s resolve, to protect a man’s heart, and to mature a man’s faith. My firsthand encounter with God’s faithfulness to hear our pleas for the men in our lives began with my father and continues with my husband and son.

James tells us, “The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results” (James 5:16 NLT). The Amplified Version says it this way: The heartfelt and persistent prayer of a righteous man (believer) is able to accomplish much [when put into action and made effective by God—it is dynamic and can have tremendous power].

Prayer is the conduit through which God’s power is released, and His will is brought to earth as it is in heaven As a praying woman, you have the power to open the floodgates of heaven through prayer on behalf of your husband, your son, your daughter, your friends.

I encourage you to pray with “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not see” (Hebrews 11:1, NASB).

Today, we’re going to do our prayer a little different. Using this guide from my books on praying Scripture over the ones we love, fill in the blanks and pray someone close to your heart.

Dear Lord, I pray for ________________.

Mind – Protect ___________ mind from any thoughts that might cause him/her to follow the world rather than You. Help him/her to think on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely and admirable. Romans 12:2, Philippians 4:8, Proverbs 3:5-6

Shoulders – No matter what___________ goes through today, assure him that nothing is too hard for You. Empower him/her to cut the cords of worry with the saber of praise and to place his burdens on Your able shoulders. Genesis 18:14; Deuteronomy 31:8; Psalm 9:10.

Heart – Place a hedge of protection around___________heart to keep corruption out and purity in. Proverbs 4:23; Proverbs 17:20; Proverbs 17:22.

Back – Protect_________in the physical and spiritual realms. Keep him/her from the devil’s schemes that would attempt to trap or trip him/er up. Thank you that no weapon formed against ________will stand. John 10:10; 2 Corinthians 2:11; Ephesians 6:10-18.

Arms – Help__________be strong and courageous in Your mighty power. Bolster his/her courage when afraid and reassure __________when he/she doubts. Deuteronomy 31:6; Joshua 1:9; Isaiah 30:15.

Hands – Bless the work of ____________ hands. Reward his/her efforts and bring success. Deuteronomy 33;11; Deuteronomy 28:12-13. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Leave the name of 1 person you prayed for today and we’ll all intercede with you.

Digging Deeper
Sometimes it’s hard to know what to pray. When you can’t find the words, look to God’s Word. When you pray the Word of God, you pray the will of God. I have several prayer resources created just for you to help you pray Scripture over the ones you love. Take a look. It might be just the help you need to become the prayer warrior you’ve always wanted to be.

  1. I got divorced on 5.30.2025. my ex abandoned me and my 3 children on 8.4.24 and he’s remarried 6 days after the divorce. He committed adultery while he file for divorce in 12.30.2024, he slept with numerous women because I saw in financial disclosure bank statements. He got away with everything dissipated marital assets and bought brand new cars for himself and his adulterer. I did pray the prayer you had and I know God delivered me from the emotional and financial abuse. My ex used to be a pastor before he became one he was divorced 3 times I accepted him because he told me he wanted to serve the Lord. He plotted against me for 3 years just to see how I fail. My God is merciful I’m still standing strong in the Lord. Ir is painful to see my children 9,6 and 3 suffered emotionally when we are forced to have timesharing because I have no evidence for physical abuse emotional abuse and abandonment is insufficient because he still see them once in a while when he wants to.

    1. I highly recommend “Divorce Care”. Participants often meet at a church. Look online for meetings, locations, and times. There is often a “Divorce Care for Kids” that is available while the adults meet. It saved my life in so many ways!

  2. I’m praying for my son Kaden Mitchell he’s 19 and figuring out life. I’m asking for God’s hand to stay on him from the crown of his head to the heels of his feet.

  3. Please pray for my eldest brother Curtis. He lost his only son last year. He lost his wife seven years ago. He is not coping well. Alcohol and other drugs have taken him captive. I know that you said only name but please also pray for Rod. He’s a good friend who has been growing in the Lord and I pray for his growth in Jesus according to the Word will really flourish this year!

  4. My 16 year old daughter was added to that prayer. She has been going through something dark. She was diagnosed with mild depression and keeps saying she’s gonna kill herself but then she says she doesn’t mean it. She’s on medication. She struggles with low self esteem. She recently got baptized and the devil is so mad. She doesn’t like to leave the house. She doesn’t like school. She thinks she’s ugly and fat. It breaks my heart.

  5. I am so grateful to hear how prayer has changed your father’s heart and the hearts of those you’ve prayed for. I need it to work in my husband’s heart. We are world’s apart in our belief and to be honest I don’t pray for him like I should. I’ve prayed for so many years, and I do see some change, but his heart and mind almost seem impenetrable by truth. It leaves me feeling contempt toward him because nothing seems to get through to his understanding. To be honest, it has wedged a barrier and I often feel like I just want to get out of this relationship for good to feel some sort of sanity and sense of well being. He needs prayer, but so do I, to be totally honest. Pray with us for deep inner healing!

    1. April, I totally understand what your saying. I have been clinging on to my marriage for 50 years. My husband says there is no heaven, he decided to become a Jehovah witness and his views and belief is not my belief. It has been a very difficult marriage and I know he doesn’t love me. He said if I ever divorced him, he would go so far away no one would ever find him. He has been physically and mentally abusive and not one person has ever offered to help me or my children to get out. I have all these many years prayed for his salvation. Dont give up on praying, I know God answers prayer. It may not be when we expect it however God answers in his timing.
April, I pray God cloths you with his full armour, that you lean on God for he is our strength or stronghold. God will never leave you. God loves you, he loves your children. Pray over your children teach them about Jesus so when they are grown they will never part from God. My children are grown now and they have thanked me many times for raising them in church and teaching them Gods love and mercy. I am Pentecostal and they have learned the difference of religion and life styles that are sinful.
God will provide all your needs!

    2. April, My husband was raised as a Jew. He would make fun of the people next door to us when they had their small group meetings on Wednesday nights (“Here come the Jesus freaks!”). It took a low point in our marriage (he was unfaithful) and a good amount of prayer (by me, our neighbor, my friends, etc) for him to ask for a reconciliation and to find Jesus shortly after that. The reconciliation was difficult, for sure. I had “terms” he needed to meet before he could come back. He met every single one of those terms. One of those terms was for the two of us to find a church. I was Catholic and he was Jewish. Neither wanted to attend the other’s place of worship. We had family friends who belonged to a UMC and they had a fantastic music program. My husband has a beautiful voice and he is also a really good drummer. He got active in the music ministry and through the words of those worship songs and the sermons he was listening to, he asked Jesus into his heart. He is a changed man…. active in our church and a Bible reader for sure. If God can change my husband’s heart, anything is possible…. anything! Just keep praying for him and I will, too!

    1. I prayed for my husband for 39 years, 4 months and 15 days and he was baptized 11/14/24. He is a changed man, truly set free.
I pray for Trevor, Alan, Sue, Alise, Alec, Victoria and Jim.

  6. Our Father in Heaven our son phillip. That God would break the hold of any demons and addictions in his life. That he would no longer be ruled by chasing after the things of this world. That he would become the husband and father and leader of our family that God calls him to be. That God would move him to follow God’s plan and will for his life. Amen.

  18. Praying for my husband, who knows the Lord, but does not want to surrender his life to the Lord. He wrestles daily with God and lacks peace. He carries anger and hurt and bitterness with him everyday. He says he can’t wait to die to be with God which my daughter takes it as being suicidal. Thanks for these prayers I can pray for him.

  19. Please pray for my husband of 24 years, Allen. I moved out in October and am hopeful for a restoration of our marriage. Not that I don’t have my issues that I bring to the marriage, but Allen’s alcohol abuse was taking too big of a toll on my health.
Allen believes in God, but is not a follower of Christ. Thank you!

I cannot really imagine life without him beside me.

  102. I pray today for my daughter Maria Gabriela that she may find Jesus and walk in his truth every day of her life.

  103. My oldest grandson has always seemed to be an angry young man most of his teenage years into adulthood. His mother (my oldest daughter) has given him lots of reasons to be angry. But that anger has caused him to be bitter and unforgiving. He has never seemed to want a relationship with me because I wouldn’t let him treat me with disrespect. At one time he gave his heart to the Lord but has never lived his life for the Lord. He is a father of two little children and he is a good father but I pray he will let God heal his angry heart. I pray the bitterness in his soul is removed.

  104. Please join me in praying for my young friend Abena: her husband has become unfaithful, is willful, negligent of her and their 3 young children, she ‘battles’ with bi-polar and struggles in her faith. May the Holy spirit guard her heart.

  105. Please pray for my son and grand daughter. They are walking around with hurt and anger. Pray for daughter n law who reached out for prayer.
They know about God, but don’t know God.

    Thank you!

  107. Please pray for my daughter and son-in-law as they were about to lose their home and not have anywhere to go. Please show them God’s strength and all they do..

  108. Today I prayed for my husband. He works two provinces away from home and only gets home every 6 months for 3 weeks. That far from home, temptation attacks him on all sides, so I pray that he remains strong and faithful to what God has called him to do.
