Let Me Tell You Who I Am and Who You Are

Once, a young girl named Martha Taft was asked to introduce herself to her elementary school classmates. She stood up with self-assurance and said, “My name is Martha Bowers Taft. My great-grandfather was president of the United States. My grandfather was a United States senator. My daddy is the ambassador to Ireland. And I am a Brownie.”

I love her confidence! Can’t you just see that little girl standing straight and sure? I wonder what my elementary-age self would have said if I were asked who I was. I wonder what my adult self would say.

For years, I had no idea who I really was. As a young adult, I would have said, “I am a wife, mother, Christian, daughter, dental hygienist, and writer.” And all that would have been true, but that’s not really who I am. It took me years to understand that I am not defined by what I do or the relationships I have. I am defined by God … and so are you.

While I was steeped in insecurity, inferiority, and inadequacy, a mentor asked me to go through the New Testament and write down everything about who God said I was. Here are 15 of them:

Matthew 6:26 I am valuable to God.

John 15:16 I am chosen and appointed by Christ to go and bear fruit.

Romans 8:1 I am free from condemnation.

Romans 8:17 I am a child of God and a co-heir with Christ.

Romans 8:37 I am more than a conqueror through Christ.

Romans 15:7 I am accepted by Christ.

1 Corinthians 2:16 I have the mind of Christ.

I Corinthians 3:16 I am a temple of God.  His Spirit lives in me.

1 Corinthians 6:11 I am washed, justified, and sanctified through Christ.

Ephesians1:1 I am a saint. (Saint means “set apart for holy use.)

Ephesians 1:3 I am blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

Ephesians 1:5 I am adopted into God’s family.

Ephesians 1:7 I am redeemed and forgiven through Christ’s blood.

Ephesians 1:11 I am chosen by God.

Colossians 1:22 I am holy in God’s sight, without blemish and free of accusation.

Honestly, I knew the verses already. The problem was, I just didn’t believe they were true about me. Yes, I was saved; there was no doubt about it. But that teenager weighed down with a low self-perception from my past simply became an adult Christian weighed down with low self-perception in the present.

With the list in my hand, God asked me a question, one He is asking you right now: Do you believe I tell the truth? So do you believe you are who I say you are? My answer was yes. I hope yours is too.

Right now, you may have many titles attached to your name. But remember this: You are a chosen, anointed, appointed, holy, and dearly loved child of God who is equipped by the Father, enveloped by the Son, and empowered by the Spirit.

Now friend, go about your day with the confidence of a woman who knows who she is and where her power comes from!

Heavenly Father, thank You for choosing me to be Your child. Help me always remember that I am who You say I am—set apart for holy sue and dearly loved. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Let’s have some fun. Leave a comment that says, “My name is (Your name) and I am a __________! “

  1. My name is Keshawnda Johnson and I am a child of God. Deeply loved and cherished by my father. He has prepared a life of prosperity, wholeness, health, and mental happiness for me. I have walked into my purpose and I’m thankful to him for the life he has given me. Amen

    1. Keshawnda, yes! You said it all. Thank you for your words. I am feeling lost and homesick. My husband and I (in our 70s) just moved across the country. Far from my sister in Christ friends & family. I am saving your words as I go forward. Blessings. Fran

      1. Hang in there, Fran. My husband and I did the same things a little more than two years ago. I felt like you do for quite awhile, but God was with me and eventually I found peace and new Christian sister-friends. So will you. I’ll pray for you for that to happen quickly! But don’t give up – H has a plan for you, He loves you, and you will get through this!

      2. Hi, Fran!! My husband and I are also preparing a move. I understand your feeling of being “lost.” Praying you’ll find a home church and make new friends soon. ❤️❤️

I read your devotionals and really enjoy them. I was wondering about the young girl who stood and claimed her great grandfather was Taft. I am also related to Taft through his wife Sarah. Is the lady still alive today? I would enjoy getting in touch with her.
    Thank you

  4. My name is Lauri and I am a retired therapist, mother of two amazing children, wife of a man that I have had to work hard to forgive, knitter, excellent friend, lover of all things outdoors, survivor of childhood neglect and abuse, survivor of family attacks, and most of all I am a person whose life changed upon finding God and realizing he is the father I never had. I am a person who has to remind herself everyday that I am better than the insecurities that plague me and I am worthy of being loved. I am a person who hopes to leave a legacy of having done better for those in my care than what was done for me.

    1. Thank you for sharing your testimony Lauri. I struggle with insecurity and feeling worthy of love.

Thank you for sharing that it is possible to grow and heal.

I am having a hard time writing this affirmation but I will write this now because your post encouraged me that I can choose to believe this regardless of how I feel.

I am fully loved and accepted by God, He loves me and doesn’t withdraw from me when I fall short and sin. I am fully accepted as I am and He cherishes me, protects me, fights for me and never leaves.

I pray so much that my boyfriend and I will work out. I haven’t been the best girlfriend, insecurities from the way my first marriage ended in infidelity has caused my boyfriend and I problems. His marriage ended in divorce and I have been a single mom for about 4 years before meeting him. I knew God lead us to be together.

Lauri, will you and the ladies here please pray for Ethan, myself, Gabby and Kaia? That the Lord mend our hearts and heal our relationship?

It has been a struggle, I need to be gracious with my words and more than anything trust him completely. I’m afraid of being abandoned again.

Fear has been my enemy and so has my insecurity/jealousy.

Please pray for deliverance from that and healing for Ethan and I.

I am incredibly humbled and grateful for your prayers. Thank you Lauri and ladies here. Thank you all very much for praying 🧡
