Do You Believe God Tells the Truth?

Have you ever had trouble believing God’s Word is true? That God is tells the truth? Yikes! Not many of us would throw up our hand and say, “Yes!” And yet, my emotions and actions often tell a different story.

(Last week I posted a devotion about how God not only loves you, but He also likes you. And perhaps, like many others, you have a difficult time believing that. So let’s talk about believing God today. Click here if you missed it.)

Sometimes God speaks to me in the comics. I know. That’s strange. But He does.

The Pickles comic strip is one of my favorites. It features an older couple named Earl and Opal Pickles. One day Earl and Opal were sitting on a porch swing and the following conversation ensued.

Frame one: Opal, “Did you know the DNA of humans and chimpanzees is 98 percent the same?”

Frame two: Earl, “I know it, but I don’t believe it.”

Frame three: Opal, “You know it, but you don’t believe it?”

Frame four: Earl, “Absolutely, “I don’t believe everything I know.”

And there you have it! In the wise words of Earl Pickles, for most of us, the problem isn’t that we don’t know the Truth in the Bible, but it’s that we don’t really believe everything we know. We go to Bible studies year after year, hear sermons Sunday after Sunday, and read books page after page.

But until we move from knowing to believing, we’re going to be stuck in the mediocre, mundane, milquetoast faith that expects little and receives even less.

Jesus said, “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). The Greeks had many words for our one word know. The Greek word used here is ginosko. In the New Testament it frequently indicates a relationship between the person “knowing” and the object known.

Believing the truth is more than head knowledge, but a heart decision to apply the truth by taking action.

When I first made a list of verses about who God said I was in Christ, my true identity, I can honestly say I didn’t believe they were true about me. Not really. I would have never admitted that to anyone—not even to myself. I’d smile and say “amen” with the best of them. But when the rubber of the truth hit the road of adversity, I moved those verses into the category of nice gestures on God’s part, rather than the truth that could set me free and give me victory to overcome.

Jesus said this about the Pharisees: “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life” (John 5:39–40).

These guys studied the Scriptures in minute detail. They knew the Scriptures inside and out, every jot and tittle, dot and dash. However, they did not believe the truth that would have set them free and given them eternal life—the Truth that was standing right in front of them… Jesus.

Paul wrote to the Ephesians: “I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe” (Eph. 1:18–19a).

You were saved when you believed—past tense. You have great power when you believe—present tense. Believe what? When you believe that God is Who He says He is, and that you are who God says you are. When you believe the truth about the promises of God, the power of God, and the provision of God in your life. When you not only know the Truth, but also believe the Truth.

The Greek word for believe used in Ephesians 1:18 is a present active participle. Don’t let that little English lesson make you nervous. It just means it is a continuous action. It applies to those who are presently, actively, and yes, continually believing God.

If you feel your walk has become a crawl, your faith has faltered, your fire for God is smoldering, perhaps what will reignite your passion is a decision to believe what God said is true for you and about you. Just because God spoke a promise does not mean you automatically posses the promise. We must let go of unbelief and take hold of the promise with the grip of belief to make it yours. (He likes you!)

If you’ll join me in believing God tells the truth about your true identity, leave a comment and say, “I believe God tells the truth about me!”

Heavenly Father, I have head knowledge about the Bible, but I’ll admit, I don’t always believe what I know. Show me truths that I have not moved from my head to my heart. Show me in my deepest parts the areas where I would quickly say that I believe, but I truly don’t. Help me to show that I do believe by my actions and my choices. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

    1. Most definitely, believe God tells nothing but truth about all of us. we are made in his image, after he likeness, What he says I am i receive it now took me many years to consider myself worthy. But, thats another story from years back. God bless all.

    1. Paula in our weakness our Lord gives us His strength when we get real with Him He gets real with us❤️🙌🏻✝️🦅

  2. I believe! As the breadwinner in our family My greatest fear is not being able to provide for my family. I am sales and for the last few years my sales numbers have been off. I’ve never worked harder. I will continue to work like it depends on me, but… I will let go of the fear and trust that he the one ultimately in control.

    1. My husband and I are in the same boat. I’ve applied for a job after having four years off to take the pressure off of him. We homeschool our 3 and 4 year old in so very sad at going back to work and I’ll just see how it goes… I feel this too because I want to be in control. I prayed about a job and I got it and I got everything I wanted in it too so if it’s meant to be it will be.
      Trusting God and believing it

  3. I believe God tells the truth about me! WOW, just typing this helped solidify that truth. I can step out in belief and stand on His word.

  4. I believe God, that what He says is true & I pray to let go of my unbelief. Thank you for naming what is a stumbling block, the unbelief. God’s time table is not my time table, but His word is true.

  5. “I believe (know) God tells the truth about me!”
Psalm 139:1 You have searched me, LORD, & you know me. 2 You know when I sit 2 when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You discern my going out & my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. 4 Before a word is on my tongue you, LORD, know it completely.

  6. I believe God tells the truth about me!

This devotion has led me to share a spiritual breakthrough I just had.

After 47 years of marriage, I had to make the hardest decision of my life and recently divorced..

One of the most challenging struggles has been to let go of wanting to fix, change and SAVE my husband. And on my way to church this past Sunday as I was praying, in my Spirit I heard God saying , Carrie, you are my daughter. It’s hard to put into words but basically it was a truth I’ve known, but it went from my head to my heart in a profound way. Not just a feeling. It was letting go of my identity of being my ex-husband’s wife and receiving the Spirit of being my Father God’s daughter! I AM His daughter. I experienced a stronghold being released and filled with a joy of looking forward to serving Him first and then people according to His will.

  9. Great devotional! Luv it!!
When we don’t believe -or fully accept- that we are truly children of GOD, we are putting our opinion above what GOD is telling us! That’s dangerous! That’s is another sin to add to our lists — namely rejection of GOD’s Opinion! There is No way we are smarter than our CREATOR !!!Please take GOD’s Love into your heart! Completely & whole heartedly ! Believe in HIS Merciful Love!!
    Bless y’all

  11. I believe God tells the truth about me and empowers me to put faith into action! Thank you Sharon! Your devos really speak to me.

  12. Oh Sharon, you are a blessing to us women as you weave your words so well and touch our hearts with truths and questions we all ask. Thanks so much for a meaningful lesson and blessing. I too suffer with not feeling like I deserve it so than I don’t live it like I should, but working on that and always being assured, no matter what my external circumstances are, I am free!! I am free! I am free!
Mary Magdalene was portrayed this way in the Chosen and it is a reminder to us, that it isn’t a redemption if it is only good once, he redeemed us for all time! And Jesus says, “did you think you would never sin again?”. Oh, we serve such a mighty Savior! He loves us so and redeemed us for all time forever and forever! If you can say a prayer that I continue to find freedom despite my finances and believe that this too shall soon end.
