God Chose You On Purpose for Purpose

I’m writing over at Proverbs 31 Ministries tomorrow and thought you might enjoy this too.

Have you ever felt invisible—like your name lingered at the bottom of the list unspoken… unnoticed…as if you were standing in the background while others were called forward?

Have you ever wondered if you were somehow missed—overlooked in the choosing, forgotten in the moment that mattered?

If so, take heart, dear one. You are not alone. I’ve been right there with you.

There was a day when the prophet Samuel was sent by God to anoint the next king of Israel. His journey led him to Bethlehem, to the house of Jesse, where one of his sons would be chosen.

Jesse called his boys together—one by one they passed before the prophet. Each strong. Each capable. Each seemingly fit for a crown.

And as Samuel looked, God spoke quietly to his heart, “Not this one… not this one…” Seven sons stood in the light of expectation, but none were the one God had chosen.

Confused, Samuel finally asked, “Are these all your sons?”

And Jesse, almost as if remembering something forgotten, replied, “There is still the youngest…but he is out in the fields, taking care of the sheep.”

The youngest.
The overlooked.
The one not even invited to stand in the lineup.

Left in the fields.
Left out of the moment.
Left off the list.

But not left out of God’s plan. He sees what others miss and calls what others overlook.

While others saw insignificance, God saw a shepherd’s heart. While others dismissed him, God had already decided. David was called in from the fields—from obscurity into anointing, from hidden places into holy purpose.

Oh friend, perhaps you know that feeling—overlooked, disregarded, set aside. To wonder if anyone sees you, if anyone would choose you. But here is the truth that changes everything:

God sees what others overlook.
God chooses what others forget.

Jesus said, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you” (John 15:16 NIV)

Paul wrote, “In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.”  (Ephesians 1:11-12)

John wrote: “If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world” (John 15:19).

God chose you on purpose—for purpose.

You may have been passed over by people, but you have never been passed over by God. You have been:

Chosen… not by accident, but by intention.
Loved… not because of perfection, but because of grace.
Called… not from the crowd, but from the heart of God.

So when the whisper comes—that subtle, familiar lie that says, “No one chooses you…” recognize it as the enemy’s voice. And answer it with God’s truth.

I am chosen.
I am dearly loved.
I am His.

And the God who called David from the fields is the same God who calls you today—
not overlooked, not forgotten, but fully seen, fully known, and fully chosen.

Dear Father, Thank You that I am not forgotten, not overlooked, not unseen. Even when others passed me by, You called me Your own. Help me to walk in the quiet confidence
of being chosen and dearly loved—and to lift the eyes of others who feel hidden in the fields. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

What emotions stir in your heart knowing that you have been chosen and are deeply loved by God. Leave a comment and let’s share.

Consider forwarding this message to someone who might need encouragement today. Better yet,  Enough: Silencing the Lies that Steal Your Confidence might be just the book she needs to fight the lies that tell her otherwise and let her know that through Jesus Christ…she is enough.

Do the voices in your head say you’re not good enough, smart enough, pretty enough… or just not enough, period? It’s time to stop listening to lies that sabotage your confidence and embrace the truth of who God says you are.

    1. About 10 years ago, I turned my back on God because of disappointment in Him and I found myself in a very, very dark part of the internet. I ended up discarding my family and friends for darkness. But God didn’t leave me there! He kept telling me that He had chosen me and I needed to come back to Him. When my family had enough and my husband was about to leave,.God continued to pursue me. I’m not exactly sure what He did but He brought me out of the darkness, He fought for me! He wouldn’t give Satan the victory! My eyes were opening to the deception and lies I believed. God virtually pulled me out of the pits of hell I’d gone to. He forgave me and I repented, all because He’d chosen me. He didn’t want me out in the barren field. This reading made me realize again, that he could of left me where I was, but nope! He had a plan and purpose for me. Now I work with women, who like me have discarded their marriages because of infidelity. I show them God can save them and their marriages because they were chosen.

  1. This was perfect timing for me. I have struggled with this all of my life and still do to this day. I don’t want to feel this way but I do. God, please help me.

  2. I am So Grateful for this. I have struggled with believing that my conversion isn’t good enough and questioned my salvation. I know I didn’t feel loved growing up by my Mother and Dad. I long for complete assurance that I belong to Jesus. I go to a Baptist Church now for 9 years with my husband. I do really struggle with memory which makes me feel insecure. I want so so much to know without a doubt that I am saved. Please help me. Thank you so much for this beautiful encouraging and hope filled reading Today. I will look forward to more. Sincerely Denise Meyer

    1. WOW, just last night I was telling the Lord this. I have a desire and dream in my heart that has yet come to pass. I’ve been waiting patiently and yet no door has opened. I know the Lord sees me. I keep telling the Lord. You see me and you place me where I belong. Thank you Lord for reminding me that you indeed see me . One day in your perfect timing you will open the right door for me to enter in.

  3. Thank you so much! It’s actually what I needed to hear today. May God continue to bless you and your love ones. You are making a difference in the lives of others. Amen!

  4. Thanks a lot for this wonderful word of encouragement. It really ministered to my heart. I am not forgotten nor overlooked but I am fully seen, i am fully choosen and i am fully remembered. Thank you Jesus! God bless you Sharon!

  7. Sharon…….On this very gloomy day here in Pennsylvania, this is something I needed to hear. I am 78 years old and live alone in a Senior Living Facility which is having quite a few problems as it is a brand new buildings. The residents who live here are often overlooked due to not enough staff yet. With an awful situation I am dealing with, I often feel alone, unseen and even though I shouldn’t feel this way, sometimes I wonder if God has forgotten me. I know that is true, but to start my day today, Your words have reminded me that God is always there beside me and He would never forsake me. I must be more patient.

  8. Honestly, i never thought about ageism or lack of youthful vitality to be a reality to be dealt with if one remained active and sharp. Well, life has a way of humbling one’s perception of self-reliance. Who knew that in my 50’s, I would come face-to-face with the reality that i cannot overcome through grit and knowledge. I’m learning that it is through rhythms of grace that growth and spiritual maturity thrive. Thank you for helping me confront my self and accept the Father’s love as I walk chosen, called, and His.

  9. Thank you for reminding me that I am chosen and loved by God! I am in a moment of need and reminder so you have blessed me today!

  10. The emotions that stir in my heart knowing that I am cherished, chosen, and treasured are feelings of assurance, comfort and joy.

Hebrews 3:14-“For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end.”

  11. Thank you for sharing this today. I needed to hear this is my life right now. I know I will continue to struggle with knowing I have a purpose but God’s timing of you posting is perfect!! God Bless you!

  12. I am a domestic violence survivor, part of the abuse was isolation and a cruel narrative that increased after I got away. He told convincing lies to people, how friends and family could believe such lies is beyond me, and the fact that none of those people came to verify the lies, just excepting what he had to say.. i was 64 when it went down, so one would think this doesn’t sound like me..
But the lies left me alone, isolated from those i love, i no longer wasn’t invited to birthday parties, holiday celebrations, graduations etc…
I needed to be reminded that I am choosen and loved by God, that doesn’t take away the pain and isolation, but it is a fact I need to hold onto

  13. This is so powerful and very timely. Many are thw times when I look around the peolpe i hang around with.it gives me a feeling that I am the least.Thank God that He saw me, chose and called me,by His grace. Thanks Christine

  14. Thank you for this. I have struggled with not being seen. Thank you for reminding me that God sees me for who I am not who Satan wants me to think I am.

  15. This message make me feel Wonderful 😊 happy and made me smile. It let me know that God chooses you even if you feel hidden lost or left out. He can show you, your life has purpose with him and through him.

  16. Thank you for this i really needed this since I have been home healing from surgery, it’s so easy to fall in this trap n listen to these unfounded words that are not from my lord Jesus Christ, I thank you again

  17. My husband divorced me after 35 years of marriage and it’s only been over a year. My heart is still hurting so bad this message really helped thank you.

  18. Hello,

I really appreciate these words of wisdom. I thought I was the only one who felt that way. Good to know that God really don’t have no respecter of person. Most of all he is in control. May God continue to Bless you.

  19. I’ve just finished your devotional book, “Listening to God Day by Day”. I truly enjoyed it and the wonderful stories you shared. My 28 year old daughter and I have been blessed by your inspiring and well-thought words. May God continue to bless your ministry to reach more and more people. I’ve read 3 of your books so far and look forward to reading more. God had given you a precious gift. Continue to treasure your time with your husband and your son; they are gifts from God also. 1. I just finished your book, “A Sudden Glory”. It was a blessing. The last two chapters spoke to me more than any other place in the book. Your story of your young life growing up touched my heart to the point of tears. It was truly a joyous experience that you had when you met and spent time with a woman and her family who had a relationship with Jesus. I am a PK of a Methodist pastor and being in church was second nature to me. I accepted Jesus into my heart during a Lay Witness Mission when I was 12 years old. The Holy Spirit came into me in an unmistakable way I shall never forget. That being said, I have struggled over the years, being a good Christian woman and doing the good Christian things, but lacking in the depth of my personal relationship with Jesus. Last October and December, I had two brain surgeries. As I have been recovering, I am more dependent on God than ever before. I have grown much closer to Him and find more peace and pleasure in my quiet time with Him in the morning and different times during the days. I’m also more bold in thanking God to people in public, unabashed to talk about Him. Like you, I looked forward to the day when I “hang up my hat” and go to Heaven to experience the ultimate “sudden glory”. Thank you for your witness and inspiration in this book!

Oh sweet friend. I pray for a complete recovery! I used to go on Lay Witness Missions when I was a teenager. They were such a growing experience for me and I dare say a seugway into what I’m now doing as an adult.

  20. Thank you, Sharon,

Another great reminder God has a plan for our life. I am a promise for a purpose. YES!!!! Hallelujah!! We are so Blessed!
