Praying for Your Husband from Head to Toe

Sharon JaynesMarriage, Praying Wives Club 237 Comments

I rarely post about marriage, but today is an exception. If you’re not married, hang with me. Please don’t hit the unsubscribe button. This doesn’t happen very often. Let’s join together and pray for our married friends who are struggling. Then next week, we’re back to our regular encouraging posts!

I can still remember being sequestered in the “Bride’s Room” of our church just moments before the organist began to play for the early arrivals. As I sat in front of an oversized gilded mirror trying not to wrinkle my dress, I daydreamed about the man who would become my husband in just a few moments. He was everything I had ever hoped for: handsome, smart, ambitious, and strong. And most important, he loved Jesus.

Yes, this was a good day.

As I stared at my reflection, an unwelcome thought popped into my mind. Doesn’t every woman feel this joy on her wedding day? What could go so terribly wrong that such a high percentage of marriages end in divorce? Am I fooling myself? Am I that much different from the thousands who have walked the aisle before me?

I decided right then and there that I would do everything in my power to make my marriage a success. It didn’t take long for me to discover that the words “in my power” were a problem. “My power” was not enough. Marriage was hard.

Fairy tales end with the words, “And they lived happily ever after.” But if we could see the Epilogue to those rides off into the sunset, we’d most likely find daily struggles, potentially divisive decisions, and angry arguments sprinkled throughout. Fairy tales stop short of telling us about tension over whose turn it is to wash the dishes, pay the bills, or put the kids to bed. They leave out the part about stress over holidays with in-laws, frequency of sex, and who gets to spend what when. We naively repeat the words, “for better or for worse,” and then are shocked when the first hint of “worse” rears its ugly head.

If you’ve been married for more than a few days, then you’ve most likely figured out that the blessed union doesn’t stay so blessed without a lot of work. And I dare say, the most important “work” we can do as wives is on our knees. Only God can truly protect our marriages and our men. And He invites us to participate in the unleashing of His power by praying for our husbands and turning the key to the storehouse of heaven’s door for blessings outpoured.

We’ve got to remember: The real struggle in marriage is a spiritual one. Our husbands are not the enemy; the devil is (2 Corinthians 10:3-4).

Paul urged believers to enter into spiritual battle armed and ready with the Word of God. He wrote: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms…Take up the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God” (Ephesians 6:12,17 NIV).

Through prayer, the enemy’s plans are intercepted; the principalities and authorities are defeated. Through prayer, the power and provision of God flows into the lives of His people.

I had to learn that prayer is not a means of gaining control over my husband, to whip him into shape and make him the man I wanted him to be. Prayer is a means of relinquishing control of my husband and asking God to shape him into the man that He wants him to be.

Regardless of where your man or your marriage falls on the continuum of terrific to tolerable to terrible, there is always room for improvement. Prayer can make a bad marriage good, and a good marriage great.

There’s no better way to pray for someone than praying Scripture. We’ll use the following as our closing prayer for today. While I love to pray for my husband from head to toe, today we’ll just focus on our husbands’ head.

Dear Lord, I pray for __________.

His Mind – That he will have the mind of Christ and think as the Holy Spirit would lead him and not the flesh. (1 Corinthians 2:16)

His Eyes -That You will keep his eyes from temptation and that he will turn

his eyes from sin. (Matthew 6:13; Mark 9:47)

His Ears – That he will hear Your still small voice instructing him. (1 Kings 19:12, Psalm 32:8)

His Mouth -That his words will be pleasing to You. (Psalm 19:14)

His Neck – That the decisions that turn his head will honor You in all regards. (Deuteronomy 5:32)

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Ponder this verse today: James 5:16 “The heartfelt and persistent prayer of a righteous man (believer) can accomplish much [when put into action and made effective by God—it is dynamic and can have tremendous power].” (AMP)

If you’re feeling brave, leave your prayer request, in just a few words, and then pray for the name above yours. I will pray for the first responder. (To honor your man, please don’t leave a lot of details. God knows all about it!)

Lord, please lay your hands on him and help him to feel your presence. Let all he does glorify you. May all he does glorify you and reflect your glory!

  3. He disappointed me because he didn’t honor my birthday, my one request of the year. Neither of us manage this well and don’t know how to move ahead. It’s a recurring theme. So sad as we love each other but can’t seem to find a way to be there for each other. Thanks for the prayers.

    1. We’ve been married 62 years. Long ago we decided not to celebrate birthdays or any holiday with gifts. Each of us and our marriage is the gift. Saves ALOT of argument. Celebrate each day with love…not gifts. It works. Blessings to you…..

      1. The thing is Diane, that you decided together not to celebrate holidays. This woman’s one request to celebrate her birthday was ignored.

    2. Deb, Prayers up! For your disappointment and his not YET knowing how to respond. My husband simply did not value the celebrations as I had been raised to, I found a way to fill the sieve of my husband’s brain…so full with bills, work, trying hard to keep the car running and yard mowed, while I completed all of my list and still found the time to add him to my list. I put a reminder on his phone…… it triggers a week before, contains and joke to make him smile and tells him how much I love him……at first I was still disappointed that he did not remember these things on his own because it made me feel that I wasn’t worth the effort, made me feel invisible…but God sees us! He sees our disappointment and fills it to overflowing! Wait and see! Prayers that you find a way to help him, help you find a way to do this! Prayers up that he is covered on his journey along the way.

  4. For my husband Tim he is so angry right now. I’m on disability now and walk with a walker for now and am limited in what I can do. He has a lot of anger issues. 1. I pray for healing for you, Andrea.
I know this sounds crazy, but the times I do remember the Bible verse, “ a gentle answer turns away wrath” Proverbs 15:1a it works wonders! I have a son who has some hard mental issues and his biggest struggle is anger. I pray for Tim. Blessings………

  5. Please pray for my daughter and her husband … they are going through and have been going through a difficult time (for 4 years so far) She is trying hard and praying, but is getting weary of the fight to save her marriage. Please pray for endurance and encouragement!! Thank you!

    1. Dear Jesus,
I am bringing your daughter, Charlene, and your son, Kevin, into your throne room of grace. I pray that their three chord strand is so vibrant and serving Your kingdom; Your faithfulness will be celebrated for generations to come. May this be the sweetest and protected time. Kevin’s headship to be surrendered and solid in the foundation of Your Word. Holy, holy holy, are you, Jesus. Amen

  8. My husband Michael is predestined to be an evangelist. The spiritual warfare has been severe for two decades. I have the gift of The Word in song( ALL Psalms, numerous passages, and Spirit downloads), and my husband is a abundantly equipped Word expositor. We are are to prepare His bride for His soon return. Our marriage is being birthed.

    1. Lord, nothing is impossible for you. I pray first for Mj that you give her a heart and head of forgiveness. Provide her husband with a heart and head of forgiveness also. May they seek and find a godly counselor or couple to walk this journey of restoration with them. In time May their marriage be stronger than before and protect them from further infidelity. Teach them the gift of honesty, trust and compassion for one another. Amen

  9. I am really blessed with a wonderful, loving Godly husband. I just finished reading Praying for your Husband, from head to toe. Its was eye opening. I thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot. I could put myself in many of those areas.. I highly recommend the book to everyone, no matter where your relationship is with your man. I wish she had a book for praying for your wife.

    1. Deb, my heart goes out to you and your husband. My husband has terminal cancer in the bone and other areas, and I am praying the blood of Jesus over your husband and my husband for complete healing in the name of Jesus. Also praying for you as it is so very hard to walk along side them and not be able to do anything. Prayer and my lord are my refuge.

    1. Ebonie, I am praying for your miracle! Please do not be discouraged! Our father is the great provider. That being said, please do not hesitate to reach out to your church which can be an amazing resource for things like food or even helping out with a bill. 14. Please pray for my husband Randy for his health and well being and strength daily! In Jesus Name! 🙏🏾💜

  15. This morning I ask for prayer of restoration for my my marriage. My husband’s name is Dennis. We have been married for 18 years and have been struggling for a couple of months now. I have been praying and rebuking all works of the enemy that is trying to destroy my family. I know that God is still in the business of doing miracles and I believe mine is coming!

  16. My husband and I have been married 51 – almost 52 years. Retirement has been a new journey for us. He still works for the company on a “consulting” basis – goes to the office 1 or 2 times/week and works from home. He really might as well still be full-time, but at least we are together as he works. We want to travel more to see the beautiful United States. This past year we have not been able to due to cataract surgery and now we are facing my husband having surgery for carpal and cubital tunnel syndrome. My husband seems to be depressed… He has not been wanting to attend church (we watch service online). Please pray that the joy of Jesus spring up within him. Our son and daughter-in-love have a fabulous marriage with 4 wonderful god-loving children. Our daughter was in a difficult marriage but from it birthed her son. His father died at age 30 suddenly of heart attack when their son was 5. Now our daughter is a single mother with a teenager. She has been in and out of relationships with men that would not be good role models for her son. Please pray with me that she (Caryn) will remember that Jesus is her first love and God has the best future planned for her so she can wait on Him to bring a godly man into her life if it be His will. Thank you!

  17. Celebrating 38 yrs of marriage tomorrow. Please pray that all areas of our marriage will be fully surrendered to the Lord and under the Blood of Jesus.

  18. Praying for my husband, Patrick, of 25 years! For the past year and a half, he’s been on the road driving a truck during the week and home on the weekends.

  19. I thank God for my awesome Husband. Asking for strength for my husband. He is having a difficult time at work today. Asking for prayer for him.

  20. Please pray for my husband’s addiction. Break the chains in Jesus name!!! Give him confidence, courage and holy spirit blessings. Help him trn to you and change what I cannot.

  21. Please lift up my hubby Steve to know he’s amazing and perfect for our family. We’re a blended family which has its own struggles. We are truly blessed though!

  22. Praying for my husband to be free of depression and alcoholism that have taken captive his mind and resulted in another affair and financial struggles. Praying he is delivered and that Proverbs 5:18-19 become a reality for us. “Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you. Rejoice in the wife of your youth. She is a loving deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts satisfy you always. May you always be captivated by her love.”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭5‬:‭18‬-‭19‬ ‭NLT‬‬

    1. My heart connects with yours. I found out my husband cheated on me in June of 2012. It does get better with time and a whole lot of forgiveness. My husband struggles with depression and alcoholism as well. I could write a book on my family’s dysfunction because if it. But there is joy in the morning. A new day each day. A new day to love, fully support and fully forgive your man. He needs to know you are his biggest supporter and biggest cheerleader. That starts by praying for him daily if not multiple times a day. Don’t forget to pray for yourself and your heart as well. I’m so sorry you have to go through this. I know it’s heart wrenching all the way around. I’m not trying to tell you it’s easy bc it’s simply not. But there is hope. My husband is still battling the alcohol and depression but I won’t give up! He recently started to see a psychiatrist who is recommending a medication that will help my husband not have the desire to drink alcohol. Which is a great start. But there is so much more to that puzzle. My husband has a past of a lot of trauma and bad things he has done that haunts him. Unfortunately, Sometimes men do not feel worthy of love and forgiveness. They need us to remind them they are. I pray for your hurt and healing of your heart today my sister. I pray the Lord would equip you with everything you need to move forward. I will tell you that after the fact of my husband’s infidelity God brought beauty from ashes. We are the closest we ever been in our 32 year marriage. He is now my best friend and I can honestly say that I trust him.

  23. I pray for my husband Oswell to continue been a loving husband. For his healing and for the lord to increase him spiritually and financially.
    In Jesus name,Amen

  24. Lord, lay your healing hands on Will. Strengthen him to overcome. Restore his family. Protect him from all evil. He needs miracles Lord. You have shown up in his story so much. He’s reaching out to You for help. Thank you God for this wonderful man and your power flowing through him. Amen

  25. I pray that my husband will turn to the lord while our marriage is struggling and we seek counseling to move forward in reconciliation!

  26. He’s narcissistic. I don’t believe in hope for him. I would only ask that God would give me wisdom and guidance in how to approach divorce in a proper manner.

  27. Prayer for my husband to find local employment. He has been traveling over 13 years and is mentally & physically so tired of it. He is worried his presence isn’t enough and he is letting God down by not being here. Would love to have what is considered normal (7-5) hours so prayer for the job to present itself and his weariness till that has come to fruition.

    Thank you

Facing amputation of my foot. I do not ask for MY personal gain, but for the children and problems for our house that we live in. God HAS been good to us and blessed us with these children and my 17 years of sobriety!
I pray that God directs him with HIS Will in these matters and softens his heart. In Jesus name, Amen.

Lord, may your will be done in Avery’s husband Bruce for your glory.

  33. I love when you do prayers for family members. I have adult children that are married and have small children. I really could use help with a prayer for them to go to church and help with their marriage. Thank you.

  35. Please pray for my husband Rick. That the generational chains of infidelity will be broken. Praying new beginnings will start with him so he will be a good example for our son.

  36. My husband & I have been married for almost 22 years. It is a second marriage for both of us. Becoming a husband, step-father & granddad during our first year of marriage he loves my son, daughter-in-law & 4 grandchildren as his own. We are now retired & enjoy our days together. As I write this, I am watching him as he
reads his Bible & daily devotion while we sit together in our sunroom. We are two imperfect people who are blessed to have been given a second chance to “get it right”!

  37. I love this one Sharon! I have your prayer cards and have shared them with friends. Please pray for my husband, that he will surrender his heart to our Lord & Savior. I believe he believes, but has not surrendered. Praying for unbelievers to hear God’s voice. Blessings!

  38. I ask that, as my husband grows in the Lord, He will know deeper peace, enjoy more freedom as a child of God and have greater clarity for the future.

  39. Pray for my husband Joe for complete physical healing and pray for my son-in-law Dan to accept God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit into his life and be a faithful husband and a strong leader in his marriage and a responsible father to the baby (my first grandchild!) that my daughter and he are excitingly awaiting for their baby’s arrival in February, especially since my daughter Joslyn has had a few complications with her pregnancy up to this point. May God pour out His Grace, Blessings and Mercies on all three of them!

  40. I pray for my husband F. After a 39 years of marriage, sickness and grief work side by side to separate our love instead of bringing it together. This message was meant for me this very day! Praise be to God through whom all thing flow. Amen
    Ty Jayne

  41. Please pray for my husband, he is constantly in pain. The doctors says that it will get worse. I don’t know how not to be angry.

  42. Please pray for my husband Joe. .We’ve been married 56 years and we’ve gone through much together. He’s a wonderful husband, son to his parents and mine while they were living, a loving father and grandfather and a faithful friend and follower of Christ. He has scoliosis, diagnosed 6 years ago. He is in constant pain. We’ve tried acupuncture, spinal epidural, PT and he has had myriad of tests. The pain lingers and increases every year. There have been no solutions thus far. He has great faith and God has given him great endurance and tenacity to keep on keeping on. My prayer is for a helpful and wise solution for his pain. Mercy for relief. He is not a candidate for surgery. I appreciate your prayers for him.

  43. I pray for a husband. Jason was my last boyfriend and we planned marriage, but CoVid interfered and Jason also does not yet have a relationship with Christ (that I know of). He was brought up Catholic and the ones who taught him about Jesus did bad things to his friends. Please pray for Jason, too.

  44. What a great teaching! “ We’ve got to remember: The real struggle in marriage is a spiritual one. Our husbands are not the enemy; the devil is (2 Corinthians 10:3-4).” Often satan tempts me to find fault in my husband. Having OCD, it’s like a recording in my head. I tell myself many times, “Stop! Do not give in to this temptation.”

I pray for Avery and her husband. May God continue to bless their marriage.

  45. Please pray for my husband, Bob. I’m not sure if he’s saved. I’ve asked him many times if he has asked Jesus to be his Savior, but he’s evasive. I’m afraid he’s allowed the politics in the church to color his perception of God. Thank you.

    1. Father, we come before you now and ask in Jesus name that Cee would be released of all strongholds in her life. With You, ALL things are possible and we trust and believe You will do a mighty work in Cee’s life today!

He is a God-fearing, incredible man who loves the Lord deeply, but anger, aggression and a real mean, cutting tongue make it very difficult to submit to him as Christ would have me do. Please pray that he would have a gentle, peaceable, kind spirit.

  51. I pray that my husband will want to search the scriptures and know God and want to serve Him more each day: that God become very real to him.

  52. Prayer can heal a broken marriage. But when sin has taken a stronghold in a man’s heart and he refuses to allow God access to change his heart, sometimes a wife needs to pray from a safe distance.

He’s also easily influenced by his sisters who encourage him to leave constantly. Please pray that he will have a forgiving heart, for fear and emotional bondages to be broken and for a close and intimate relationship with God. Thank you

  69. Pray for my husband. We’ve had a difficult number of years due to several traumas that we have experienced. I’m a talker, a cryer, a feeler – His way of dealing with things is to ‘forget and move on’’ but it’s slowly shut him down.
God is starting to let my husband see the negative impact of this on his life. So I’d love you to pray for a soul healing journey for him, for restoration of his joy and for a deeper walk with God as he sees his hand holding and reviving him! Thankyou
