A Momma’s Prayer

page and so many of my FB Friends liked it, I thought I’d share it with you too. This is a picture of  my son and I having coffee at Starbucks last weekend, just before I took him to the airport to fly back to his home. (If you’re not one of my facebook family, please pop over and click “like.”)

It has been said that to have a child is to have your heart go walking around outside of your body for the rest of your life. And that is true no matter how old or how big they are!

Here is a poem for every mother who has ever prayed for a son. I bet you know someone who needs this encouragement today. Please pass it along.

I’ll stand in the gap for my son.
I’ll stand ‘till the victory’s won.
This one thing I know
That you love Him so,
And your work with my child is not done.

I’ll stand in the gap every day,
And there I will fervently pray;
And Lord just one favor
Don’t let me waver
If things get quite rough, which they may.

I’ll never give up on that boy.
Nor will You, for You promised him joy.
For I know it was true
When he said ”Yes” to You,
Though the enemy seeks to destroy.

I’ll not quit as I intercede,
For You are His Savior, indeed!
Though it may take years,
I give You my fears,
As I trust every moment I plead.

And so in the gap I will stand,
Heeding Your every command,
With help from above,
I’ll unconditionally love,
And soon He will reach for Your hand.

  1. Oh, what an amazing poem, I have 2 young adult daughters and just loved this poem. I am sharing it with a ton of my friends. Be Blessed!!!

  2. Wow God is so good! I really needed this. My son is 18 years old and we just don’t see eye to eye. He got saved in his younger years but has never fully giving himself to God. I know God has a plan for his life. Thank you for sharing,

  3. This is beautiful. I love my sons more than even I know I think. God blessed me with 2 great big gifts that I never stop thanking him for. They are 5 and 8 and I just love to watch them grow and learn. It’s awesome to watch. And even though they do get influenced by my husband who has not yet given his heart to The Lord, I know that my children hold Jesus dear in their hearts. It’s a struggle but I know the seed is there and one day I know they will make the right decision and walk with The Lord.
Thanks Sharon, this is kind of a pick me up this week as my boys are about 8 hours from home with the Uncle and Pepe on a fishing trip. They are having a great time but I sure do miss them. Can’t wait till they come home on Tuesday. It’s been a hard week but I’m almost through thanks be to God’s strength and encouragement.

  4. I loved the poem. I have 2 adult sons and 1 daughter. you can turn this into her and re-read. God has them in the palms of His hands and we have to lift them up daily and let GOD bring them back to HIM. That is my daily prayer – for them to draw nigh to HIM and He to them. Thanks for sharing.

  5. I love your new blog. I also loved the poem. I have a daughter who is not saved and I have prayed for daily for years. This poem was encouraging to me AND I will continue to “stand in the gap”. Thanks and blessings to you.

  6. Thank you for sharing this poem. It’s timing is impeccable, my one and only son has accepted a teaching job in China for a two year contract. While I am thrilled at the promise of work and opportunity for him, I worry, it is so far away. The poem spoke to me, thank you.

  9. Thank you, I am praying for my one and only son who is going thru a difficult time in his marriage, but for some reason will not bring this problem to the altar. It seems he has given up on the marriage. I have suggested counseling thru a christian counselor/pastor to no avail. I do know that the fervent prayer avails much, so I press on daily. Please pray with me, that God get the glory in this situation, In Jesus’ name, Amen! I am passing this on, because as another commentor stated, just change the gender from male to female and it would be appropriate for even our daughters. Again thank you so much for continuing to obediently allow God to use you to bless so many.

  10. My son, my third child and the baby, moved four hours from home to a attend college. I am happy for him but been so “weepy” about him leaving. As I was preparing for a devotion for tonight I stumbled upon this poem. What timing! God is good!

  11. Oh my goodness, you have no idea how much I needed this today!!! The devil has had a field day with my 15 year old son and I today!! I was feeling so useless as a Mom. Thank you for reminding me what my job is and that God holds him in his hand!!!

  12. Thank you Sharon….I truly felt that prayer sums up all my feelings and desires for my son. He is 9 and has a heart for God that I find baffling at times. He signed up to be baptised recently as he decided to say “Yes” to God and so my prayer is that he will always pursue the things that are of God. Thanks so much for sharing that. May you be blessed richly as you continue to bless us with your ‘penned’ word.

  13. Sharon I read your poem it was beautiful it really touched my heart. I have been praying for my son all his life. He was saved by the lords grace and his mercy and baptized four years ago. He has been blessed with a job and two beautiful children 13 and14 years old even tho he’s been a single father, and has been there for them since the day they were born, he struggles through the storms of life but never gives up. And I as his mom will always be there for him. Please keep him in prayer, God Bless You

  14. Sharon, this poem was just for me!! I am waiting patiently for my Prodigal son to return home! I love that precious boy so much and will continue to pray him back to God! In the mean time I trust God is watching over him and protecting him. I know He loves my son even more than I do! He has it all under control even when things seem to be so OUT of control in my son’s life!! Thank you for posting this and I am glad that God lead me here!! 🙂

  15. My youngest son turned 27 on Aug 4. He and I have a little tradition of writing each other birthday letters. Every since he went off to college, my letters have sounded like a broken record though. You see, when he left for college, he also left his faith at home. I don’t have too many chances to let him know my heart, so I pour it out in my birthday letter. This year I was praying for God to give me new words of wisdom to share with my son–new words that might penetrate his hardened heart. So God spoke to me through the poem you included in your post. I included it in my birthday letter and just pray it touched my sons heart. Thank you for sharing it and I thank God for answering my prayer with some fresh words for me to use in my birthday letter. I know my son has the Word in his heart and in God’s perfect timing He will reign first in his life again. But in the meantime, I too will stand in the gap for my son.

  16. I found this on my daughter`s Facebook page. I`s beautiful. Hands For Jesus

I will be your hands Lord,
    That feed your hungry children.
    I will give them shelter,
    Who haven’t any home.
I will be your lips Lord,
To voice your words of wisdom.
    I will be your tongue,
To teach what’s right and wrong.
I will be your voice Lord,
    To speak courage and direction.
    I will be your hands,
To give a pat of praise.
I will give your love Lord,
    To all, without condition.
    I will be your arms,
    To give a warm embrace.
I will be your hands Lord,
    To clothe your children warmly.
I will be your gentle touch,
    To comfort those in pain.
I will be your feet Lord,
To walk with those who’re lonely.
I will be your hands for you,
And love all in your name.

  17. I have read and re-read this a thousand times (ok, I exaggerate a little), and printed this out; one for myself and one for a friend going through hard times with her son.

My heart breaks for the choices my 17 yr. old son is making, but I’m learning to trust the Lord more and giving it back to Him (sometimes every minute).

Thanks for your blog, Sharon. Love reading it every day! You have such a way with words. It’s quite a gift God has given you. Thanks for using it to help and inspire others!

  18. God has equipped you in a special way to inspire us. I’m blessed to be part of your blog where I can read your God-led words. I can’t wait until you are at Athens First Baptist Church in 2015 to lead our women. Thank you, Sharon Jaynes! Thank you, God, for sharing your warrior!

  19. In my heart of hearts I know it’s a 10 but some days I forget. It’s always great to be reminded. Thank you!

  20. What a wonderful poem. I have a son that I am praying for on an on going situation. This poem really nails it. Thank you so much

  21. My son is in basic training for Army Infantry. It breaks my heart when I get those letters where he tells me how much he misses me (and my cooking LOL). He says it is so hard and I am sure it is. There’s hundred’s of boy’s – yes boy’s – they are only 18 yrs. old who are standing up and saying “Yes, I will do this for all of the people of the U.S.A.”. I am sending him this poem as I pray for him several times a day. Please when you see a man or woman in the service take a minute to shake their hand and thank them for doing what so many of us can’t. God bless!

  22. love it our children are our hearts can not miss a day praying all is well.the most important thing is for for their salvation,my hearts prayers is for salvation for all,and if my child or family or me were to fall and not make it to heaven.I would feel as if my life were for nothing.my heart crys out to the lord for all to be saved and pray that we would be quick to repent for we do not know what each day or tomorrow holds.so we cannot miss a day of prayers for our salvation. Lord may we have pure hearts and renew a right spirit in us daily.

  23. Thank you Sharon for this poem. It makes me feel I have been doing the right thing all along, as I have been praying that poem for the past 30 some what years for my son.
I will not give up and I am sure God doesn’t. So thankful to the Lord for you and your
encouraging words. The Lord Bless you, Akkie Blei.

  24. This poem really thouched my heart today, its August 12th. My son has been in and out of jail n prison, from the age of 15-20. I wept and prayed over his life, one day I told God I give him to you to finish raising I’ve done all I can. I continued to pray and sat back and watched God move in his life. Well God more then answered my prayers. For I never dreamed one day I would sit and listen to him preach. Getting back to today he is now 27. he is going to Southeastern University in Lakeland FL. I came down from Elizabeth City NC, to see a Doctor down here. I’ve been staying with my son, for two weeks. Now its time to go home and I was feeling weepy. Then I read this prayer on your blog, I really did cry then lol. Now you can see why it really touched my heart today. Even though he is going down the right path now I still pray, some times even harder. Thank you I read your stuff on Girl Friends for God. This is the first time I’ve read your blog. Judy Kent.

  25. I don’t have a son I was blessed with 4 daughters, your poem is beautiful, I love and pray for them daily. God has kept them, two are married with great mates, I am always amazed at the grace of God .

  26. Thank you Lord for Sharon, she is doing a great job. Be blessed my sister………….
Well you might not know how much i really needed this, for my 16 year old and my 9 yr old boys. I lost the elder one just a few months back, in June, and the pain of loosing him is still within me. He was 29 years…However i strongly believe God has a reason for everything and He is in total control. Lots of blessings.

  27. Hi One of the hardest areas that I find to trust God is with my children. My Son is going on in the Lord from strength to strength seeking to serve him in all areas of his life. My daughter has been to church very little my heart cries for her I love her dearly and to see her excluding God is heart breaking. So thank you for these thoughts and poem. I continue to pray Gods working in my children’s hearts.

  28. I have to say a big thank you. And thank God for this great gift to inspire mothers as they
walk this journey and assignment of upbringing children. It really needs great effort to ask
God in prayer for our sons. I have 2 ; they are 15&12. How i long to take this direction u
have given to me. May God bless you and keep you for his service sister Sharon.

    Stay blessed.
