Make Time for Beauty

 “He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught,” (Isaiah 50:4).

If you had been among the 1,097 morning commuters bustling through Washington D.C.’s Metro station at L’Enfant Plaza on January 12, 2007, you could have experienced an extraordinary gift. Tucked among the shoeshine vendors, newspaper kiosks, and lottery ticket dispensers, a young, white man in jeans, a long-sleeved T-shirt, and a Washington Nationals baseball cap positioned himself against the wall beside a trash can. From a small case, he removed a violin. Then he left the open case at his feet and threw some spare change into it. Then he turned toward the huddled masses of rush hour commuters and began to play.

If you had been one of the seven who paused during their mad dash to work, you would have had a front row seat to Joshua Bell playing six of Bach’s most difficult and exquisite violin pieces on a 3.5-million dollar, 300-year-old Stradivarius…for free.

It was an experiment by Gene Weingarten of the Washington Post. Joshua Bell, a concert violinist who normally earns $1,000 a minute, agreed to participate. As each commuter passed by, he or she had a decision to make. “Do I have time for beauty? Do I have time to pause, turn aside, and listen?”

The fiddler standing against the bare wall at the top of the escalator was one of the finest classical musicians in the world, playing some of the most elegant music ever written on one of the most valuable violins ever made. And 1,090 busy men and women missed the gift because they were in a hurry.

Every day we have a choice. As we make Acts 17:28 a practical and perpetual reality in our lives, we will have a choice. We can rush through the day and miss God’s magnificent displays of glory and articulate words of love, or we can turn aside and savor the incredible gift.

As we go through life, there comes a whisper, a faint call, a luring pull to a richer life which we sense we’re passing by. Outer hurriedness and inner uneasiness are laced with hints that there is something more, something better, something that we’re missing in the blur of life. “What could it be?” we ask.

When we embrace true union and abide in Christ, continual conversation becomes a way of life. All through the Bible we see that God spoke in various ways through various means. He spoke through dreams and vision, though a burning bush and fiery mountain, through a donkey and an angel. He spoke by writing on the wall, a wetting fleece on the ground, and forcing an almond branch into bloom. The important thing is not how God spoke, but that He spoke. Equally as important is for us to remember not how He will speak, but that He will speak. And each one of the gentle whispers or startling shouts from God’s heart to your heart carries within it the potential for moments of sudden glory. The key is not to miss it.

I pray Jacob’s words will never come from my mouth or from yours: “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it,” (Genesis 28:16). Instead, let’s listen in expectation with the words of Isaiah on our lips: “He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught,” (Isaiah 50:4).

His lavish response to our longing for something more awaits those who anticipate glory moments and awake in expectation.

 Let’s Pray

Heavenly Father, Thank You for loving me, Your daughter, enough to show me glimpses of Your glory in everyday life. Help me not to miss them. Help me not to be so busy in the blur of life, to miss You, the Source of Life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

    The first words out of my 3 year old daughters mouth this morning was “I Love You” I was running late but I stopped and took the time to talk to her. It reminded me that God is there and we need to look at our blessings.

      I noticed the sky, sun, clouds and the moon. Each representative of the masterful voice of God in Genesis chapter one. Here in Genesis He said “let there be”. Everywhere I look today I see the voice of the Trinity in Genesis chapter on calling into existence our new beginning in Him. What a Sovereign God. Trees, flowers, butterflies, bees, ……oh it takes my breath away!

    The most beautiful thing that has made me stop and take a minute to see the true beauty of this world, but more importantly the promise of Heaven, is a dear friend of mine who is dying of cancer. Her faith is amazing and she is such a witness. Check out her facebook page, Pray for Ruth Webber. She is an inspiring young women, wife, mother and friend. Heaven is about to gain another beautiful believer, while this world will be missing a beautiful gift who taught so many to cherish each day, because you just never know how many you have left.

    1. The song “Jesus You Are” by Kirk Franklin….I never listened to the words until today because the song is slow and I generally like up tempo praise music.
    2. The calmness as I enter work….I take this for granted. I noticed today because I used to work in the prison and there were people always yelling, all the time there.
    3. The excitement in my mother’s voice when I call her.
    4. The way I feel when I have fasted and prayed.

    The little boxes above with the icons baffle me – they need a word too… BEAUTIFUL is : This Fall Morning (holds even memories of past Falls/sheer nostalgia; my Prayer Mat and the time to say thank you; the text by my daughter-in-law that indicates the Grandchildren’s schedule for the day is off to a good start; the items of Food I have to make a choice over for dinner; the Bible; and have to add All the many FB post that were lifting praises.

    God’s glory totally surrounds me this morning. I awoke in our cottage beside a lake. The mist is raising from the water. The squirrels are running around gathering nuts from a large oak tree. I can hear the acorns falling on the ground as the squirrels drop them down for easy gathering. A maple tree beside the bank is turning reddish orange. The warm of the fireplace inside is so comforting, as I sip my raspberry chocolate flavored coffee. God, My Lord Jesus, you are to be wonderfully praised!

    5 beautiful things I noticed today:
    1). Small white wildflowers in my yard,
    2). The song of birds
    3). The clear blue sky with just a whisper of white clouds,
    4). The cool, crisp autumn air,

    This article reminded me about my father who died of cancer at the age of 66, it was 6 years ago, and I kept dreaming of him almost every night for a long time since then. It was like he visited me and tried to bless my next day. One of the nights, I saw a dream of my father being sick after death but transfering to other realm. Nobody could see him unless I told them he was alive. I knew in my dream he was with Our Father. My very first question to him as my dear dad who had never missed the opportunity to talk to me, or tell me the story, or just chat with me, was: “Now, dad, as you see God, tell me, please, what does Jesus look like?” And my father, first in my life, became like a small child by his spirit and started looking for words desperately, gazing at the sky above, and he could not explain the beauty of Christ. He kept saying in awe: “He is…is…He is [beautiful, shining] crimson…” My favourite colour is shining crimson, and I knew what my father ment…
    I know it was a dream, and today I read in Revelation 4:3: “And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian. A rainbow, resembling an emerald, encircled the throne.” I looked up in the internet images of jasper and carnelian – they are beautiful, warm, shining crimson colour of…blood. Such a vivid reminder!

    1. The beaming face of my son as he awoke for school.

    2. The love of our dog as he awoke and “supervised” my son and I to get ready for the day.

    3. The way the sun emerged from the lower sky, the sun’s rays reaching up to the Heavens as if a child reaching up for her Father.

    I was routinely walking this morning and at first heard a song bird singing like she was just background noise. Then, I was awakened to the fact I had asked God to show me his love this morning. Her voice then dominated my oersonal airwaves, despite not spotting her in the tree. She was giving a royal concert and doing what she was designed to do. I knew I had caught a glimpse of his love.

    Ever since I read a book assigned for extra credit at college, I’ve been really down. The author writes wonderfully, but her life story is so, so sad..and when you read it, it makes you feel sick. It’s kept me in a funk since last week and it’s been imppossible to shake off. My mom reminded me about Phil. 4:8 “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” So I’ve been doing so and this is what I’ve noticed Jesus sending me: a red rose from my garden that smells divine, songs to uplift my spirit, bright butterflies flittering around while I drive to and from school, a cool morning, a goreous sunrise, an algebra lesson I remember, my cats being cuddly, etc. The list could go on and on.:D

    1. This morning as I open all the windows and doors to let in the early day I was met with the sounds ot the day the morning crisp air!
    2. The trees have started to turn and I did not think it was time yet!
    3. The blue sky before the days heat sets in!

    As a working mom, with children who seem equally busy, I have to make “quality time” out of very small moments. One of the most beautiful parts of my day is taking my fourteen year old daughter to school. We sing to the radio or her i- phone together. I have learned to appreciate some newer artists, that I never thought I would. My daughter talks about how much the lyrics mean. To me it often still sounds like noise, but to her it is hearing from God in way that reaches her. The fact that she wants to hear Him is the most beautiful thing in the world!

    HI Sharon, for me today the most beautiful thing is my group of wee friends(my daycare kids). No matter how stressful the day is they always seem to make it brighter. I usually get in a few good laughs through the day. As I sat doing “circle time” with them, I instantly thought about your blog today. I just sat and watched the beauty of the moment The gorgeous cool, windy fall day is music to my eyes today. My house as I walk towards it after dropping my children off at school. I love my house it looks like a little cottage in the woods but it’s in the city. The view and sounds from my window as my butterfly bush sways in the wind and screeches against my window. I love to watch the butterflies come in for a drink then off they fly. I had a very hurried moment and at the end of it all. I was able to smile seek the beauty in the chaos.

    I look at everyday as a blessing. This morning I was so grateful that I woke up to a beautiful day. That my Mother woke up today and I was able to cook her breakfast before I came to work another blessing. That I was able to take a walk on such a beautiful afternoon. That traffic wasn’t so bad and I arrived safely to my employer which is a 25 mile drive. I thank God everyday for the day he has given me and even on my worst day I can always find a Glory Moment.

    Wow, what a wonderful story to remind us that we just need to slow down and smell the flowers. As i was reading this i was sitting in front of a big window and i can see the bright sun, the blue skies with white beautiful clouds, the cool, cold, crisp autum breeze, and the trees just saying hello. Then i tought how i have a beutiful 2 year old niece that whenever she is with me and i get dropped off at work she puckers her lips to give me a kiss and it’s just beautiful to see God’s love through a child.     1. The colors of the leafs as I drove to get my car fixed: amazing oranges, yellows and reds amidst the browns and greens.

    1. Watching my husband sleep peacefully in his hospital bed, thanking God he is alive.

    My husband had an appt today an hour away. I drive him due to his eyes aren;t that well. We drive down a hwy that has lakes, campgrounds and such. Being a gorgeous sunny day you get to see the perfection of the blue sky and light puff of the white clouds. Then we get off the hwy and drive down a state road. This is where we find the color differences in the trees and woodline. While driving there were orange and black monachs everywhere. It was a great drive.
    I love the days I drive to pick up my friends daughter from school. I drive through the. Country and while listening to praise and worship on Klove, I am blessed with natures beauty along with the baby farm animals, gardens, flowers and cotton fields. Can’t get any better then that!

    This time of year there are so many beautiful things to take in, but my five today are:
    1. the awesome beauty of the fall colors
    2. God’s creativity made for us to enjoy
    3. one of my friends, who is dealing with cancer and yet is such a blessing to me
    4. my husband, who helped me clean windows today
    5. the gorgeous mum plant, with its yellow flowers.

    I leave for work very early each morning and am always able to capture the sunrise before arriving at my destination. Other things of beauty that I’ve noticed today (and some of them everyday) are: the beautiful autumn colors; the blue, blue sky; the smile on co-workers’ faces when I use my gift of humor on them and the welcoming dance I receive from my Yorkie, Princess Paris, when I arrive back home in the evenings. God is great ALL the time!

    The beauty of the morning was sitting across the table eating breakfast with my husband. and being thankful for everyday. I have been blessed to be with him and then coming home from breakfast before I left for work and seeing my son standing in the hallway with a smile on his face.

    1. The Lord protected my “Bestie” Peggy, when she went outside to do some yard work and there were 2 Pitbull dogs in the corner of her yard both growling and staring her down. At the same time her neighbor came out of the house and called the dogs by name and told them to go home. They immediately left. I was so thankful that the Lord kept her safe.
    2. The little boy I care for began to giggle at something that he thought was funny.
    3. My husband came into the living room and Logan was so happy to see him that he ran to him saying, “Jeff, Jeff, Hi!” The look on my husbands face was a thing of beauty! It said I am loved and accepted unconditonally.
    4. Logan is potty training. He and I sing songs while he is being a big boy. After each song he will giggle and clap.
    5. Logan brought me a book and climbed up in my lap for storytime. He cherishes storytime!

    I was blessed by your “encouragement”. The five beautiful things that touched me today were:
    1. A lone Canadian goose on the lake near sunset
    2. A volunteer in our town who spent his entire day off cleaning an historical building
    3. A huge rainbow against the bluest sky after a very brief shower
    4. The smiles on my granddaughter’s and her friend’s faces when I showed up at their field hockey game, because their mothers, both single moms, didn’t have money enough for gas to travel there.
    5. Red leaves on my neighbor’s tree. They were almost as beautiful as the smiling faces!
    May God continue to bless your ministry.

    Oh what a beautie of a day.
    1. My daughter’s text “I love you” after she left for the school bus.
    2. The morning walk while listening to Kenny Chesney, truly appreciating the sunny day.
    3. My sister’s voice full of love.
    4. The radiologists face and calming voice when she told me, after my 2nd mammogram and an ultrasound, that it wasn’t cancer.
    5. Reading my Girlfriends in God email at the end of the day.
    Yes I am blessed! It was a beautiful day.

    While at work I noticed an elderly couple holding hands, the laughter of a small child, the warmth of the sun on my face, a woolly worm on a pumpkin, & a hugging from an old friend I hadn’t seen in a while. It so easy to take things for granted.

    today I read your blog on listening for God, I was just fired from my job BUT that allowed me to listen to a ex-muslim share is story of being saved, I was blessed to hear from my new mentor reminding me that I am a head, and not the tail, how god loves this shattered child. I got lead to and read Psalm 37, ahhhh comfort. finally, despite my situation I rested and allowed myself to heed to his words:”Trust in the lord and do good Dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.     Saturday evening the most beautiful rainbow appeared shortly before sundown. Clouds covered the lowering sun, until a bright glow caught my attention while sitting in my house. My daughter and I walked out onto the back porch into a misty rain and saw a complete rainbow, left to right. It had a darker lower rim/ring, that I had never seen before. I am so glad that I chose to take the time to see what all that glorious light was about. The perfect colour spectrum was resplendent and glowing. Thank God for His never ending miracles in nature.

    1. The beauty of the worship album Overtaken , by Christ for the Nations music, that I’ve been worshipping with for a few weeks now. 2. The smiling woman with the chihuahua who stopped to give me advice at the park today when I struggled with my walking companion, Miller, a 70+ pound red-ticked coon hound…and laughed when he barked at her.
    3. My elder and his wife, who listened attentively as I explained to them why I wouldn’t be coming to home group tonight, and generously bestowed their advice and care like a comforting balm. 4. The beauty of the newly weeded-out flower areas in my front yard., a gift from my next door neighbor who hired someone to do it for me….after a summer of neglect. 5.A conversation with my sister, by birth and by the Blood. How precious to me is Christian fellowship!

    Dear Sharon,

    Here are 5 of my God’s Beauties from today!

    1) Reading your post today helped me remember to pay attention to the glorious wonders of God’s world. I have not done this in a long while.

    2) As I waited in the car drop off lane at my son’s school, it struck me how each of us (parents) were taking care of our children and care about them – just as God does for us.

    3) Having lunch with a caring, wonderful friend who really listened to me vent about a difficult situation I have been dealing with.

    4) I noticed how beautiful are mountains are, especially today after the rainstorm from yesterday cleared the smokey air we’ve had from all the local wildfires.

    5) It was a joy to be able to sit with my teenage son and talk a little about his hopes for his future. In this crazy, busy, emotional time of his life it was wonderful to share a bit of time with him.

    God is all around us, we do just need to pay attention and then relish in his love for us.

    I really enjoyed this challenge today. And I have to say that I worked pretty hard to keep a look out for beauty today and it was more challenging than I thought it would be, but here is what I came up with.
    1. The way the sun sparkles and shimmers onto the lake in front of my house
    2. The sun rising through the treetops
    3. A shy smile
    4. The moon and the stars
    5. The noises of crickets
    At this moment I am actually laying on the trunk I my car, enjoying the nice cool air of fall and reflecting on my day. And wow. God makes some beautiful thing. Amazing.

    So much beauty around us, if we only stop to notice:

    The latest word I’ve been studying from the Bible is the word ‘love’. As I’m studying, the Lord is filling me up with more of his love. Last night I dreamt that he swung me up into the air with our hands holding on to each other. I felt so much in love and dependant on him. Today I put on a record, Jimmy Swaggart’s Golden Hits. As he sang songs about the Lord, my two year old daughter and I danced, and I felt like I was dancing love songs with Jesus! It was so nice. I saw with my heart, Gods beautiful love for me. It was a very special moment with my daughter as well; my heart flowed with love for her, and I felt like the Lord was dancing love songs with both of us.

    It was a beautiful fall day today in Charlotte, NC. I got to hear the beautiful song, “10,000 Reasons” by Matt Redmann. I had beautiful fellowship with friends over a delicious lunch. And I had a wonderful time with my beautiful grandparents today. God is good!! It is amazing how He shows His glory to us through simple things.

    Hi Sharon, my 5 things for today and what a blessing they were to me today!

    1. Your devotion, which reminded me to look through my day and realize and notice what I almost missed as Blessings, that even when situation in life can be difficult and get you down at times ( my day today, again thank you for you devotion! What a blessing! I know I will sleep better tonight), that when you stop and look He is there in so many ways.

    2. My daughter and I took our 2 dogs for a walk and the dog she had was pulling here as fast as he could because he saw 3 deer. ( my daughter, our dog. the deer and the laughter from watching them) wonderful beauty from God!

    3. God’s word and my son, earlier in the day when I was thinking about a few problems, as I was walking to the kitchen this bible verse came to me “Trust in the Lord ” and later lead me to look up the whole verse, which my son helped me find, Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. awesome beauty!

    4. My husband who fixed my flat tire today!

    5. My mom who always seems to know what I need even now at 49 yrs old!

    I deliberately went to church Saturday night so I could venture out Sunday morning to commune with God & take in the beauty of Fall. My plan was to drive up towards a place called Helen Hunt Falls here in Colo. Springs & sit on a bench overlooking the city. As I drove along the windy road upward, I saw before me golden Aspen leaves filling crevices that graced the sides of the hills. It was so beautiful and almost surreal, like streams of gold.
    When I got to the parking lot, I felt the urge to turn back around and head back to another picnic area where there is a Discovery Center. I pulled up in a hidden area & parked my car. I gathered my backpack filled with Bible, journal, books and camera. Just as I shut the door of my car, a beautiful young doe approached me. Slowly I placed everything on the ground and dug for my camera in my backpack. The doe continued to walk by as I snapped photos. Then it got startled by the sound of people and ran into the thicket by me. I approached to get a better photo & talked softly to the doe, in an attempt to reassure her I meant her no harm. Then it struck me that I was like that doe at times, hiding from the very one, my Lord, who longed to enjoy being with me, in whom I am truly safe. The doe gazed at me with these huge brown eyes and then would turn away before once again lifting it’s head to check me out. Only as I drew away to sit at a table, did it eventually venture back out into the open and finally away. Another thought came to me about how the Lord will be patient with me and pull back, waiting to see if I will come after Him.
    I continued to be aware of the serenity & beauty around me, only disturbed by a bright blue bird who had a word or two to say to me from a tree nearby and later by a squirrel who was wondering if I had any food. Each interruption brought me into a greater awareness of how thirsty I was to just be away from my long ‘to do’ list and my soul be still.
    As I began to read, a couple of verses were mentioned, ‘abiding in Him’ Jn 15:5-8 and Math 11:28-30 ‘taking his yoke and finding rest’. As I concluded my time of reading tears filled my eyes as I knew the Lord was speaking to my heart and had so blessed me as I sought to meet with him. He surrounds with his beauty in so many ways.
    The Lord ended my time with beautiful music that filled the air from the Will Rogers Shrine that last about 15 minutes. I so didn’t want the serenity and peacefulness to end. During my mini retreat, I was reminded of how Jesus would get away from the crowds so he could spend time with God. How wonderful that when we do make the effort to slow down, seek and acknowledge Him, we can encounter Him right where we are, in whatever we may be doing.

      That is sooo beautiful. I was in Colorado this past weekend at Frontier Ranch. I saw those same trees. Oh how beautiful! I could just picture you. Praise God for His creation!

    1. My dog snoring while she snuggles close…it is not loud, but she is sleeping well. She has been a good friend to me while I have gone through many life changes and troubles.
    2. The cool, crisp morning….felt wonderful.
    3. The smell of the roses growing in the front yard.
    4. My supervisor was back from vacation today…my life is always easier when he is in!!
    5. I bought an old desk at a thrift store to refinish…it had been painted and as I started to remove the paint this evening, I think the wood underneath is mahogany….it is beautiful. I never expected a cheap thrift store find to be mahogany….the wood is beautiful.

    1. One of my students held my hand for no apparent reason. I felt strength in her touch, as if God was telling me, “I’ve got this covered.”

    2. The butterflies are migrating and the butterfly bushes in our outdoor classroom are full of them. I love to look out my window and watch them flit from flower to flower.

    3. As I did car duty this afternoon, I felt the warmth of the sun on my face. It was like being wrapped in a blanket.

    4. I had a friend write me an email of encouragement. I really needed that encouragement today.

    5. My adult son sent me a loving text. It is good to know that I will always be the first woman in their life and they love me dearly.

    As the day comes to a close I am thankful for the reminder to observe and take in the beauty in each day that God has given me. I saw the smile of a mother as she hugged her son departing for school, the bright purple blooms of a beautiful plant, hearing the purr of a kitten. All of these allowed me to see the beauty of God in my surroundings.

    it was clear on both horizons on my way to work but raining where I was, I was late and trying not to muddy up the air with complaining or frustration, then the sun shining from the early morning on one horizon formed two rainbows on the other and reminded me of God’s promises. it was a great way to start a hectic day in peace. When I got home my husband gave me a hug and we spent some uninterrupted time alone together, just quietly riding in the car. when we got back, my grandson said you know what grandma? what? I love you! my son-in-law made a great dinner and my blankets were warm and cozy. the rest of the day was a blur of activity, but those blessings interspersed between the rush were really nice <3

    4. A banana bread that turned out perfect (that is a miracle) lol
    5. Two pretty, green and yellow gourds found growing where our garden was two years ago. We haven’t planted anything for two years but there they were, two
    pretty little gourds to decorate with for fall.

    1 thee special devotional time and prayer with my husband as we start the day
    2 the gorgeous red sun spreading its rays in the moning skies over the Pacific Ocean, with the sillouette of palm trees
    3 His presence at our Monday Bible Study Prayer Group meeting, leading us in our next project with a dream, a vision, and how to carry out the mission

    5 His Word of instruction, comfort, and grace as i end the long fun day, and one more…

    First of all I just loved your “Make Time For Beauty” devotion. I really needed that reminder right now. Here’s what God showed me last night:

    Three weeks ago our first Grandbaby was born to our beautiful daughter and son-in-law. He has been a pretty good baby, but colic set in a couple days ago. Oh my was it ever hard last night. They had come over and everyone was bouncing him around trying to calm his little tummy. He cried, and cried. Then after about three hours while his mother was holding him he suddenly focused in on her face. I mean really looked at her. She smiled and said “it’s gonna be okay, Buddy Jesus loves you so much.” and she prayed for him. Such a calm came over him and his eyes rolled back his body relaxed and he fell fast a sleep. That beautiful moment between Mommy and baby, and that little calm, peaceful face were (at least to me) a sweet kiss from Jesus. . . a glimps of His beauty amazing beauty. Much like your sunrise happy face.

    I was reminded that I need to stop and focus on Christ’s face in the midst of all my struggles. . .I know that (like my daughter) He’ll reassure me and calm me no matter what is going on around me. =)

    Mine is a little boy named Gabriel who is in my preschool class. He has a speech delay and a hard time expressing himself. The beautiful thing is when I ask the class to repeat a prayer after me. Gabriel, with all his enthusiasm, says the prayer as loud as he can. I know God is listening to him! That is a beautiful thing!

    beautiful blue clear sky this morning ,fresh breezy wind,my dog and cat,and i think it was a eagle flew over me walking thru the yard looking at the sky telling god how beautiful the sky is and a thought about my husband who passed away sudddenly 5yrs ago.and october 31st would of been his 53 birthday he was so much on my mind wish i could of hugged him for his birhday .I asked the lord if he would tell buddy i love him and happy birthday.
