Why I’m Not Worried About the Election

I don’t know about you, but my emotions have been all over the board about this upcoming Presidential election. It is so easy to fall into the ravine of worry, anxiety, and outright fear. So let’s just talk about it a minute.

During one of my “less than trusting” days, God reminded me that He is still in control. Yes, God does give us the risky gift of choice, but He is still sovereign and sitting on His throne.

God reminded me of King Cyrus. See, Jeremiah prophesied that the rebellious Israelites would be taken captive by the Babylonians for seventy years. Years later, that’s exactly what happened. Jerusalem was destroyed and the Israelites were taken captive for seventy years.

Jeremiah also prophesied that God would raise up a Persian King named Cyrus who would conquer the Babylonians and set the Israelites free. One hundred and fifty years later, that’s exactly what happened. The prophet even called him by name…Cyrus…amazing. In 539 B.C. King Cyrus decreed that the Israelites could return to their homeland and rebuild the temple.

Stay with me. I know this isn’t my normal type blog post…

Here’s the prophesy: “This is what the Lord says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I take hold of to subdue nations before him . . . ‘I summon you by name and bestow on you a title of honor, though you do not acknowledge me’” (Isaiah 45:1, 4; see also 41:2-25; 42:6). About His sovereignty over all nations, God says of Cyrus, “He is my shepherd and will accomplish all that I please” (Isaiah 44:28).

Stay with me here. Here comes the good part…

Now one might think that Cyrus must have been a “mighty man of God,” but he was not. Far from it. He worshipped a whole host of gods. However, God chose him to play a major role in the history and life of His chosen people.

The prophets referred to the heathen King Cyrus as the Lord’s “shepherd,” and his “anointed.” See, even though King Cyrus was not a Yahweh, God-fearing king, God still used him to bring about His purposes. “All that I please.”

And God can still do that today. God will do what God will do. He can and will work through godly and ungodly leaders alike. Cyrus is not who you or I would have chosen to be “president.” But he was exactly who God used for His purposes at that time in history.

So that’s why I’m not worried. Paul reminds us, “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Romans 13:1

Daniel reminds us, “It is He who changes the times and the epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to wise men And knowledge to men of understanding. Daniel 2:21

Jesus reminds us in His words to Pilate before his crucifixion, “You would have no authority over Me unless it were given to you from above. (John 9:11)

So that’s why I’m not worried.

We pray.

We vote.

God is on His throne and His purposes will not fail, no matter who sits in the oval office.

Does this truth calm your heart?

  1. Sharon I love your book praying for your husband from head to toe I’ve read it over and over and over and have tons of blessings thank you very much. I wish you would write a new one.???

  2. Sharon, Thank you for this reminder that God is on the Throne & his will be done! We need to see more of this at this time instead of all the negative posts about the candidates! Bless you!

  3. I’ve been saying the same things, but your blog post settled my mind even more. God is over this election. I need to do my part and study the platforms, pray about the issues at hand, and let God do His will for America. God bless you for the solid message that God is still alive and working all things out for His people.

  4. I “hear” what you are saying but I selfishly don’t want me or my loved ones or anyone for that matter to live through the disaster and devastation that has happened in the past under other horrible leaders like Hitler for instance. I have so many questions for God. I have a circular arguement running in my head. God gives man free will to do what he wants, but God is sovereign and in control. His will be done. One doesn’t fit with the other. All I know is God does allow bad things to happen. Really bad things. Don’t get me wrong. I have had so many blessing from God. I just feel like we humans keep messing up big time and we make our own beds we have to sleep in. And it can be really really bad.

I know free will and God’s sovereignty is confusing. It always has been and always will be. Our human minds think “either or” but with God it is “both and.” I minds are too finite to understand it!

  5. Thank you so much for this perspective! I love this!! In some ways, this has been hidden in my heart, but it’s so validating to see this in print. I want to share this with all my Christian friends! Especially my pastors who are currently preparing a series on Leadership. This would fit in so well! Blessings to you!!

  6. Very relevant post Sharon regarding the upcoming US elections. Thank you for the reminder!

  7. This does calm my heart. These candidates are trashing each other and saying awful things whether they are true or not. I do not know who is the better candidate because of these awful things they keep saying. So I am not going to worry about this election any more. I give it up to the Lord and I pray that the one who gets elected is the person the LORD wants in there.

Thank you for your wonderful insight. It has made me calm and more confident than ever in the Lord.

    God bless you!!!

  8. Thank you Sharon. I am so grateful for your words of wisdom from our LORD. HE is KING of all kings and LORD of all lords. No matter who comes president, HE has the authority to do HIS work in this time of history. GOD bless you.

  9. Thank you Sharon for this very calming reminder. SO MANY need to read it and hear it, so I’ll be sharing it with everyone I can think of!
    Blessings on you!

  10. Did not know of that bible reference, but for the past couple of months God has put peace in my heart to trust that he has an awesome plan! I am confident that God is going to use he or she and touch their lives in unimaginable ways. I am excited to see what our good, good Father is going to do!

  11. Sharon – what a timely message for me! I have struggled with my decision from the beginning! However, I HAVE to vote! There are too many men and women who fight and give their lives to give me the right to do so and to not vote shows such disrespect to those who have gone before us and still preserve for us this right. As I continue to pray about my choice I will say my final prayer about my decision and listen to what the Holy Spirit whispers to my soul and confidently choose thanks to your article. Oh me of little faith to not remember that God is in control regardless of who is in the White House!

  12. Thank you Sharon. I, like many others, worry what will happen no matter who gets the election. We need to keep praying as a nation for God’s will to be done and to keep our trust in Kim.

  13. I’ve been struggling in my faith about this election. I’ve admitted this to God. Your words are comfort that God’s will will prevail and the story is so relevant to this election. I’m grateful for your obedience. Thank you for sharing your truth revealed from God. Much comfort to my heart.

Many are the plans in the heart of people but God’s plan will prevail. Proverbs 19:21

  14. I wish that I can rest in that but as a person of color, I find it difficult to accept that things will work out. Amongst my friends, we see a country at its core that doesn’t accept us. Thinks we are less than, second class citizens. That has an unbias towards us that is completely untrue. When at my core, I want the same as anyone else. That there really are no limitations to what I or my family can do or achieve. Asking me to trust that we will be safe and that God is my protector? With what I have seen, I’m not there yet. I’m in progress.

  15. Sharon, this is a wonderful reminder to us. I have lain in bed at night fearful of what the future holds for my child and grandchild. Thank you for reminding me that all the worry in the world is not going to change the hand of God. His will prevails.

  16. Sharon, I was so anxious about the election! I thought of not voting but quickly realized it wouldn’t be the right thing to do. My mind was in such turmoil until I read your blog post. The timing was perfect, it was a Godsend and an answer to prayer. So I did my civic duty and voted and felt very much at peace ! Thank you so much for reminding me that HE IS in control and HiIS WILL prevails.

    God Bless You !

  17. Although I am reading this post late it is definitely confirmation to what God revealed to me during the time I had to make my choice on election day. It also comforts me to be reminded that no matter what the story looks like presently, the end is already established, and I have the privilege to know the author. This is one time I am not upset to know the end of a story before I experience it for myself.

  18. I prayed for my husband today from head to toe.

Iam not worried about the election. I know the King of King and Lord of Lord, who holds all power in His hand. Proverbs 21:1 tells us the King heart is in the hand of the Lord as the rivers of water. He turneth it whithersoever He will.
