Did today’s title make you stop in your tracks? Did think to yourself, “Of course I believe God tells the truth!”  If so, keep reading.

God speaks to me in the comics. I know. That’s weird. But He does.

The Pickles comic strip features an older couple named Earl and Opal Pickles. One day Earl and Opal were sitting on a porch swing and the following conversation ensued.

Frame one: Pearl, “Did you know the DNA of humans and chimpanzees is 98 percent the same?”

Frame two: Earl, “I know it but I don’t believe it.”

Frame three: Pearl, “You know it, but you don’t believe it?”

Frame four: Earl, “Yes, “I don’t believe everything I know.”

And there you have it! In the wise words of Earl Pickles, our problem isn’t that we don’t know the truth, but it’s that we don’t really believe everything we know.

For example, do you believe:
You are a saint. Ephesians 1:1
You are blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ. Ephesians 1:3
You are holy in God’s sight, without blemish and free of accusation. Colossians 1:22
You are complete in Christ. Colossians 2:10 NASB
You are chosen by God, holy, and dearly loved. Colossians 3:12

Do you? Do I?

We go to Bible studies year after year, hear sermons Sunday after Sunday, and read books page after page.

But until we move from knowing to believing, we’re going to be stuck in the mediocre, mundane, milquetoast faith that expects little and receives even less.

Jesus said, “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). The Greeks had many words for our one word know. The Greek word used here is ginosko. In the New Testament it frequently indicates a relationship between the person “knowing” and the object known.

Believing the truth is more than head knowledge, but a heart decision to apply the truth by taking action.

When I first made a list of verses about who God said I was in Christ, my true identity, I can honestly say I didn’t believe they were true about me. Not really. I would have never admitted that to anyone—not even to myself. I’d smile and say amen with the best of them. But when the rubber of the truth hit the road of adversity, I moved those verses into the category of nice gestures on God’s part, rather than the truth that could set me free and give me victory to overcome.

Jesus said this about the Pharisees: “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life” (John 5:39–40).

These guys studied the Scriptures in minute detail. They knew the Scriptures inside and out, every jot and tittle, dot and dash. However they did not believe the truth that would have set them free and given eternal life—the Truth that was standing right in front of them.

Paul wrote to the Ephesians: “I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe” (Eph. 1:18–19a).

You were saved when you believed—past tense. You have great power when you believe—present tense. Believe what? When you believe that God is Who He says He is, and that you are who God says you are. When you believe the promises of God, the power of God, and the provision of God in your life. When you not only know the Truth, but also believe the Truth.

The Greek word for believe used in Ephesians 1:18 is a present active participle. Don’t let that little English lesson make you nervous. It just means it is a continuous action verb. It is applied to those who are presently, actively, and yes, continually believing God.

If you feel your walk has become a crawl, your faith has faltered, your fire for God is smoldering, perhaps what will reignite your passion is a decision to believe what God said is true for you and about you. Just because God spoke a promise does not mean you automatically possess the promise. We must let go of unbelief and take hold of the promise with the grip of belief to make it yours.

If you’ll join me in believing God tells the truth about your true identity, leave a comment and say, “I believe God tells the truth about me!”

Heavenly Father, I have head knowledge about the Bible, but I’ll admit, I don’t always believe what I know. Show me truths that I have not moved from my head to my heart. Show me in my deepest parts the areas where I would quickly say that I believe, but I truly don’t. Help me to show that I do believe by my actions and my choices. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Are you ready to move what you know from your head to your heart…to really believe what God says is true about you and your circumstances? Then this book is for you. Take Hold of the Faith You Long For: Let Go, Move Forward, Live Bold will move you from a mediocre faith to a mountain moving faith!

    1. JESUS said,
” … THY Word is Truth”
      (John 17:17).
      GOD is, ” … a GOD of Truth …”
      (Deuteronomy 32:4).
      JESUS is the Truth
      (John 14:6).
      To GOD be the glory.
      Amen.
      Thanks.

  1. I BELIEVE WHAT GOD SAYS ABOUT ME! This is an area I struggled with for many many years! It’s only the past few years that I’ve been able to honestly say I believe what the Lord says about me. I believe His word is true for me as much as for anyone else! It was the negative pride that kept me from believing! Jesus is Lord and He watches over HIS word to perform it! His word does not return to him void, but accomplishes that which He sent it to do!

  2. Good morning, this is so relative to me. I’ve been struggling in the areas of actually believing and just not head knowledge. My sincere desires are to know God, believe God and believe my true identity in him. Please pray for me.

I choose to believe God tells the truth about me!

  3. Yes, I believe GOD truly indeed speaks the truth and I am saying this because I am a living witness of GOD’s goodness. My life is an open book to my family and my dear friends and they have seen all my ups and also all my “downs” …but because I have surrendered my life to GOD and always seek Him, wait for Him every single day ( day, noon and night) through meditating upon His words, GOD in His unfailing love took me by His right hand and uphold me. Like the song, “Testify to Love” ( with 2 versions by Avalon and by Wynona) …me too testifies to GOD’s unfailing love…as long as I shall live.

“I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living.” Psalm 27: 13 NIV

English is not my first language, I learned English when I got here in the United States, and still a hard time to understand the grammar. However, the short paragraph from the comic book you included into this reading was a big question mark on my head. Or I did not really understand what you meant. Because I don’t believe we evolve from the chimpanzees. Please explain.

It has nothing to do with chimpanzees or evolution. The point of the comic is that he doesn’t believe everything he knows.

  6. Sharon, I believe God tells the truth about me!

As always, you write words that speak to my heart. Thank you for the reminder that it is God’s Word and the Holy Spirit that ignite my ‘spiritual flame,’ when my ‘walk crawls, and my faith falters,’

May God continue to bless you, your family, and your ministry.

  13. I do believe God speaks the truth about me in His word. I choose to believe when my emotions don’t align with it. It seems it’s in my head more than my heart- like it used to be when I felt closer to the Lord. Praying for God to strengthen me and enable me to believe more deeply with my whole heart, as I trust in Him.

  15. I want to believe God tells the truth about me. I’m just having a hard time with it for a long time now. So full of shame regret and feeling weak because I’ve neglected God. Find it so hard to believe He’s not given up on me…the lies are so many and so strong it’s hard to see the truth anymore. I’m sad, overwhelmed and tired 😪

    1. Kathie, you are not alone. I’ve felt that way before. Keep on seeking God, worship when you don’t feel worthy. I can’t count the number of times I have prayed, “Lord I believe, help me with my unbelief. ” The only way through is to replace lies with the truth of Scripture. Every time you catch yourself thinking an untrue thought, read or recite a Bible verse that tells the truth.

So often I have felt worthless and unlovable, but God doesn’t see me that way. Incredibly, He loves me even on my worst days, even when I do or say things that are wrong. I don’t always feel God’s love. I don’t always fight to tell myself the truth of God’s love. I often stick human qualities on a God who is not like us. I need to remind myself of what Scripture says. I need to tell myself the truth.

1 Timothy 1:9 “who has saved us and called us to a holy life-not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time”

Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. ”

What an incredible love! God doesn’t wait for us to get it right, He loves us even when we are getting it all wrong. Kathie, you may not feel it, but God does love you. He always will, even when you find believing impossible. I understand the battle against shame, regret and feeling weak, I fought it for years. You are not alone.

    2. Kathie, I know exactly how you feel, I’ve been there myself and still I sometimes fall back into Satan’s trap of lies. I thank God every day for not giving up on me. And every morning I spend time with Him, telling Him how sorry I am. Deep in my heart I heard Him say, I forgave you, now forgive yourself and forget the past and spend today in the love that I have for you. LET GO! You are nolonger that person, when you gave your life to Jesus, He made you whole and are now Clean, Believe God…. STOP believing Satan the father of lies. You are the beloved child of God. It doesn’t matter what you feel, its what you know. Feelings change but God remains the same ALWAYS. God bless you!

    3. Hi Kathie, I know what you’re saying because I have been in this same place for months now. But there’s something I want to tell you. When I was first starting to really walk the walk of faith, I knew there were going to be times that I would fall, so I said, “God, no matter how many times I try to run away, or how convinced I am that I don’t want You anymore, promise You’ll chase me to bring me back to You.” After this time, I have found myself in a season where I’ve wanted to run off, and guess what God did? He made it clear as day He was after me. The point in sharing this with you is that God is faithful to do what He always does and when He speaks something He means it, no matter how far we go or how we have neglected Him. I’ve felt guilty and shameful for doing that too but He reminds me that no matter how much we say we’re struggling, struggling means we’re fighting for Him, and fighting for Him means love for Him. ❤️ I pray that You would cast your sadness into His trustworthy hands and bring your weariness to Jesus’ feet; He will restore the joy of your salvation in the name of Jesus. God, I ask that You would renew Kathie’s strength to soar like an eagle in Jesus’ name. Amen. God bless you and I’ll be praying for you, sister!
