And God Said, “It is good.”

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good,” (Genesis 1:31 NIV).

It’s 7:05 AM.  I’m sitting on my patio with a cup of steaming coffee in my hand and a well-worn Bible in my lap. A gentle morning breeze ruffles my hair. Quietly, God whispers, Listen.

“What God,” I answer, “Are you going to tell me something special?”

Just listen.

I close my eyes and let the sounds of morning paint a picture on the canvas of my mind.

A robin sweetly sings. She’s answered by a crow’s caw. A red bird chirps and a high pitched staccato tweet interrupts. A dove coos sweet nothings to his lifetime mate and she returns coos in reply. An orchestra of various birds fill the air like instruments tuning before the curtain rises on a new day.

The telephone rings and I am startled back to reality as the modern day task master demands and requests. The day has begun, and I promise to sit with the Lord once again at day’s end.

It’s 7:05 PM. I am sitting on my patio with a steaming cup of coffee in my hand and a much-loved book in my lap. Once again God says, Listen.

“Are you going to tell me something special?” I asked.

Just listen.

The birds are still singing, but their songs are masked by other noises congesting the air.  Cars roar as they speed down the nearby highway. A plane soars overhead leaving a trail of rumble following behind. A violin whines as a child practices her lessons. A little girl squeals with delight as she’s chased by her daddy home from work. A rhythmic thump echoes on the concrete as a teenage boy bounces a basketball on the sidewalk.  An ambulance siren pierces the evening as it heads to rescue someone in distress. A train whistles in the distance.

The phone rings again, but this time I ignore the interruption. The Lord calls me to sit still and think about the two bookends of my day.

I thought about the beauty of the undisturbed morning with nature awakening to a new day. That must have been a sampling of what God heard in the garden before He created man. But amazingly, He chose to create us anyway. He knew what we would do to His perfect world. He knew the cacophony of sounds we would introduce: yelling, crying, arguing, gun blasts, boom boxes, cars, airplanes, trains, and bombs – all drowning out the sounds of His creation. And knowing what He knew, He looked at man and said, “It is very good.”

No matter how much noise we make, no matter how much mess we make, no matter how many times we interrupt, if He had to do it all over again, He wouldn’t change a thing.

As you go about your day, stop and thank God for His gentle whispers among the noises of life.

Oh God, You are very good.

 Let’s Pray

Dear Lord, sometimes I wonder why You bother with us at all. And yet, You love us. You looked at man and woman in the Garden of Eden and said, “It is very good.”  I am amazed at Your great love for me.In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

 Now It’s Your Turn

When is the last time you rose early in the morning to listen to God’s creation before the rest of the world began to stir? Give it a try. Set your alarm and join God in your backyard. Take a pad of paper and write down your thoughts. Note the sounds of creation that you hear.

Yes, we do make a lot of noise and make quite a mess, but as one song writer said, “These are the signs of life.”  Make a list of the signs of life you see around your home today. Perhaps it is a bicycle in the front yard, a toy left on the floor, a dirty sock peeking from under a chair. These are the signs of life in our little part of the world.

The answer to your two questions under the heading “want more” is All the time, and Many, many , many times. The Lord recently after the home calling of my wife had in my grief equated my pain and suffering over my loss with His grief with pain and suffering for His loss of those who choose not to come to Him to be healed and saved. Does that make sense? Or is it just my imaginings? I believe it’s Him speaking to me and He told me the main reason but not all them yet and they will come. The main reason was so that I could understand His heart in it’s loss. I’ve had many such encounters, Some deep sorrow and some with tears of great Joy. During a moment of deep sorrow one time I thought I heard as if one being was talking to another. I heard the words , One who has the Father’s Heart. Previous I had wondered why I go through these moment of sorrow for people who refuse Him and Great Joy when they accept Him an then in one of moment of sorrow I heard those words and it gave me peace knowing it was Him working on my heart to reveal more of His Glory that I may love Him more. remember you asked the questions. God’s Love to all of you. <3 <3 <3

Sharon, Had to share this every morning at 6 I walk to my barn to feed the horses. I sit at the back door that faces one of the pastures and listen. The chorus of birds, the songs of the night crickets still singing and the morning sky as it changes each second as dawn gets closer is so amazing! My girls are no longer home to ride my geriatric equines and people say “why do you keep them” can you guess why!! The Glory of gods creation at 6 AM!

Love it! I have a new book coming out in a few days, A Sudden Glory. Your story is a wonderful example of what I’m hoping to open women’s eyes and hearts to experience!

I unfortunately am in a scramble every morning when I wake up trying to hurry so I can catch the early express bus to work. But, it’s when I am on the bus when I am still and I find my moment to talk to God. As the we exit the freeway and begin the 45 minute ride, Instead of the wonderful sounds of nature, it’s the sound of the engine and AC is that I hear. But it’s okay for me since I know i have Jesus along for the ride.

God moments are sooo special! Quite a few mornings as I wait for a bus,my Lord stirs the starlings & seagulls to perform an aerial ballet. They’d be sitting on the telephone wires then as I walk to my stop, they took flight.Circling the skies in ever
widening loops;one seperating, soaring higher than the others (almost out of sight).Thank you,Lord for the message. I too can soar if I but follow you. With you all things are possible.

My favorite place to meet with God is early in the morning, as the sun is rising, on my back deck with coffee looking and listening to everything He has made. My biggest struggle right now is my two toddlers are waking up at 6am so I am not getting out on my back deck as much as I would like. But one day I know they will learn to sleep longer! 🙂

Thank you for the devontionals ! Even on a busy day I can still have quite time even if it is only 5 minutes!

  7. Lori Gasparaitis August 2, 2012 at 11:22 am #

During my morning bike ride yesterday, God spoke to me, saying the same thing “Listen”. Therefore, today’s devotional was no mistake. Once again, I am brought to the notion of living in the moment of my life. I spend much time thinking of the yesterdays and the future. I dwell on mistakes of the past and obsess on how to prevent them from happening again in the future. I believe God wants me to stop that and He is nudging me into a better habit of listening and living within my moments of the day.

God’s statement “It is very good” will help keep me focused on His creation and knowing HIs plan for me will always be very good.

    Hello Sharon
I try every morning to meet God in my living room but the best place that He and I really connect is when I’m camping for long periods of time. Like last year I was camping with the family for a week. In the mornings I would get up and go for a walk while everyone was still sleeping. Well by the end of the week I had written 3 poems about my meeting with Him. A few months back while I was planting my vegetable garden and needing extra strength, He sent me a mother Robin. It reminded me that with Him I can accomplish anything. And if a Robin can build a nest and feed her young with just a beak, I can plant this garden. Then just the other day He peered through the clouds looking like an Owl. He whispered “I will carry you wherever you roam” I have poems for each of these moments. Perhaps one day I could email them to you.

my favorite time is at 6:30 am when i come to my desk and begin my devotional. it’s so quiet and no one stirring except my little dog but even he knows not to bother me.

  10. Susan August 2, 2012 at 12:02 pm #

This poem is a favorite of mine:

The kiss of the sun for pardon
The song of the birds for mirth
You’re nearer God’s heart in the garden
    Than anywhere else on earth

This is my favorite place to be with God, I can see, hear and smell the beauty that He gave us.

Good Morning Sharon, I love reading all of the GIG devotion, they always minister to my heart at the right time. It seems like each devotion is always personal with me.

Since I am not a mornining person, and I don’t wake in time to do anything but get the kids and I ready for the day, I actually spend alot of time listenting and talking to God, whether it is on my way to work, in the shower, and when I get to work, I spend the first hour or so with God. I know it is unconventional and may not be ideal, but it is working for me right now. I look out the window at work and just listen and meditate on God’s peace.
I also try to spend an hour before bed meditating on God’s word. But once again I am so thankful for you, Gwen and Mary. I hav been reading you all’s material and devotion for 3 years and I am happy to have someone to relate to. I started my personal journey with Christ 3 years ago and you all have been apart of every step.

  12. Shirley Lowes August 2, 2012 at 12:57 pm #

I begin each morning on my patio, with a fresh pot of tea at 5:30 a.m. It has been light for about 15 minutes and the birds are singing, parrots squawking as they fly over, the roosters are crowing and the hens laying eggs. Another morning in Costa Rica. Life is very different here, morning voices preparing for another day that always begins very early. In these moments I ask God for something special and He always complies with just the right word from the Girlfriends in God. He is great!, our God, always on time with just the right touch. This is the day the Lord has made, and I will be glad in it.

In my Jesus chair before everyone else gets up. Or after they go to bed. And on my dirt road walking.

  14. Suzanne August 2, 2012 at 1:14 pm #

I love to be up in the morning before everyone else when I get to hear the birds sing and sometimes it’s at night when I lie in bed and listen to the crickets and the frogs talk to each other. My father was disabled for most of my life and used to sit in a chair at the kitchen table and just stare out the window. When I asked why he said he was in church……his thought was that all he had to do was look out at all of the wonderful things God made and that he and God could talk right there since he could not go to church……….

  15. Gerry August 2, 2012 at 1:21 pm #

It’s a bit after 6 AM and I just walked in after listening to my birds and God. I treasure that time with God, sitting in my comfy chair in the screened porch with something to drink, my Bible, journal, and Jesus Calling on my lap. I watched three birds peck at each other as they tottered on the fence. I can only think they were cleaning one another. Often, they take a sip of water from the fountain or frolic as they bathe. I know that His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.

Good Morning dear and girlfriend, Sharon!
How you bless my life with this devotional.
My favorite place to meet GOD is in the balcony from my bedroom.
I love see the trees and contemplating around…

One honor and privilege my husband and I work with you and produce videos from you for the Reign of GOD and for many women around the world.

    Love, Tati

    Hi Sharon,

I too love to sit on my back porch and listen to God’s creation. I have bird feeders, bird baths, and lots of flowers. Being in my yard is one of my favorite places to be. Whether I am working in it or just admiring the beauty around me. It always makes me appreciate my little piece of the world God has given me. The other place that stills my heart for the Father is on the beach. The beauty and sound of the waves is a constant reminder of God’s glory.

  18. karen wehrle August 2, 2012 at 2:07 pm #

I meditate each morning on my way to work and pray in my car. I never put the
radios on so I can be at peace early in the morning. I listen for the sounds of
silence and it is soothing before the busy day begins once again.

  19. Laura Julien August 2, 2012 at 2:22 pm #

On my front porch, with my bible and a cup of coffee. I read until I’m full then I begin to sing praises unto him as I behold the glory of his handywork. Birds chirping, squirrels chasing each other, beautiful trees, clouds in the sky, the quietness of the morning just before a busy day begins. Before the whole house is awake. Just me and my Lord. Sitting on the front porch. I think of my mom and my sister as I look my beautiful plants that were gifts to me when they passed onto glory. My praise soon turns to earnest intercession on behalf for people and/or situations He drops in my spirit, or thanksgiving for things that He has done, and then more praise just for who He is! Oh, how I love Him!! These are moments that I will cherish forever and keep in the forefront of my mind when the world seems like it wants to cave in on me. I will remember my front porch meetings and eagerly await our next encounter!

Thank you and God bless this ministry!

  20. Taña August 2, 2012 at 2:28 pm #

On my back porch. It is a second level porch and we live on a heavily wooded lot in MN. I can see the bird feeder and I am surrounded by trees. I am almost close enough to reach out and touch the squirrels playing in the branches and if it’s really early, or really late I can hear the deer walking through the trees and under where I’m sitting. It’s pretty awesome. 🙂

Thank you for these sweet reminders: of God love, and to take intentional breaks to hear God in the midst of so many other distractions. My favorite place to meet with God is outdoors near water: a lake, a river, or a beach. The beach is my favorite. It’s just impossible for me to witness the beauty before me as I gaze out into the water and the sky, and NOT recognize the majesty of my great God who made it all. (And, Who also allows me to enjoy His wonderful creation free of charge). It all leads me to worship everytime. I’m so grateful that just about everywhere I turn, there’s some body of water I can sit by here in FL. #grateful

  22. Melissa August 2, 2012 at 2:39 pm #

It’s easy to bask in those “It is very good” moments in the early morning before the house wakes. I treasure every uninterrupted word read, every sip of (hot) coffee, every deep breath. But what hit me over the head this morning, was part of “Now it’s your turn”. I’m determined to carry that contentment to the later part of the day, when all those “signs of life” weigh me down, and to delight in the toys left scattered, wood chips dumped out of shoes after a hard day’s play, and smeared toothpaste. For if it weren’t for all the noise, the quiet wouldn’t be as sweet. 🙂

  23. Pat Stubblefield August 2, 2012 at 2:40 pm #

Praise God! On my patio in the cool of the morning with a cup of coffee is my favorite meeting place with God. He is so loving and awesome. After working for 26 years and being laid off due to economic down turns, I thanked Him for allowing to slow down and see and hear the blessing of a cool morning. The singing and the beautiful feather painting of each of the birds reminds me of just how much God loves us.

  24. Maritza August 2, 2012 at 2:42 pm #

No where else do I feel closer to God and His presence than when I am in the midst of nature. It is an overwhelming feeling of calm and perfect state. I am always struck by how amazing it is; each and every time. It is there that I am reconnected.

  25. Linda August 2, 2012 at 3:36 pm #

Love to sit at our kitchen table with my cup of coffee so I can look out the window & see our backyard… Birdhouses, birdbath, hummingbird feeder. Or actually on the deck if it’s not already 100+ degrees!

  26. Michaela (ma-k-la) August 2, 2012 at 3:45 pm #

Hi Sharon & girlfriends in God….

This mornings message was very inspiring because I often sit and listen to all the sounds God has made for us. I sit on the balcony very early in the morning and talk to our Lord. I tell him, it’s easier for me to talk to him then it is to pray. I can’t go a day without talking to our Lord early in the morning and of course, throughout the day.

Where I work our drive-way is exactly one mile long. It’s out in the sticks at a quarry. I have my windows down each morning and turn off the radio just to listen to the early morning song birds and I say hello to all of Gods creatures that dwell in the woods along side of the drive-way. God is on my mind all day and I talk to him all the time.

  27. Danielle August 2, 2012 at 3:52 pm #

My favorite place is in my backyard on my patio also. We live on the canal to a small lake, aand I love to listen to the birds and watch all the animals that come out to play so early in the morning! The other day, two baby bunnies appeared and started to play, and I looked over to my lower level patio to see a baby turtle! I am in awe of His creation every morning as I sit out here before my 2 little ones wake up and the craziness starts!

  28. Emily August 2, 2012 at 4:07 pm #

my favorite place to meet God is with my nose to my living room floor in complete surrender. it’s awkward but humbling and God just has a way of holding me and comforting me there.

  29. Carole August 2, 2012 at 4:11 pm #

My favorite place to meet God is behind my house by the small lake. Sometimes a fishing pole in hand and other times I just sit and listen to God. God also sent a wonderful Christian man and his wife to fish and discuss the Bible with me. What a blessing!

I had to smile so big when I read this excerpt. I did just this exact thing on Monday. I woke early and after tending to the very first garden I have ever grown, I sat on my patio swing, looking out over the yard, enjoying the beauty of all the hard work we put into it the prior day. As I sat there I thought about how “still” the world seem at that moment. I closed my eyes and just listened. Then it was on to the daily routine. That night as I sat on my front porch, my son quietly reading in his room, my husband had ran to the store and I sat again, alone (which is highly unusual 🙂 ) and just listened as I watched the amazing canvas skies that God paints for Arizona fall behind the moon. By this time the birds were quiet (sleeping I assume), but now the crickets were singing there harmonies, but in the background were still some subtle sounds of “life”. I too pondered over all this with a smile on my face and tears of happiness at God’s beautiful works, that few people slow down to enjoy, in my eyes. It was a moment I wll not soon forget and hope to enjoy again soon. God bless you for dedication to this site and thank you for taking time to share with us each day.

my husband had a dream several years ago to build a fountian. One that looked earthy. When he was done we put a swing in back of it and it looks over our pond and the woods out back. It has seen many times with God and our daughters wedding. It’s not rich and fancy as it may sound but listening to the water falling over the rocks and seeing the water run over the fountian makes us both Thank God for his blessings as we listen to it and the birds in our country home.

I have to say that I’ve found my most fulfilling and encourageing moments with God is in the shower. I don’t know why but the hot water and the steamy room seems to open up a door for me and God seems to walk in and just ministers to me. And of course in the mist of my enduldging moment the water turns cold because my family is up and someone turns on water in another part of the house. I think i’ll take your advise and wake up maybe 15 minutes earlier. Thanks for your inspirational blogs.

My favorite place to meet with God:

In the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere where the stars glitter like diamonds on black velvet against the crystal-cler sky! Then glory of His handiwork sings to my soul and I know, just know, that He hears me as I praise Him! I know that He is with me and that no one and nothing can come between us. I am His precious child and He holds me in His arms to keep me safe.

I am so amazed at how blind I was!!! untill I had a problem with my heart and than life is so amazing now!!! I see everything I feel like I have been reborn the trees the birds the flowers the brooks when I walk it is overwhelming. My kids faces when they sleep and the pure joy of just hearing them in the house, before I was so stressed and just mad at everything now not so much. God gave me a second chance and he also gave me a wakeup call and it was that life is a gift I have put my sweet little blessing everywhere see them and I have told the Lord I will tell everyone of your love till my last breath. He is so good!!

I used to have a room in our house that I could close off and be alone with God. But we lost our house in December. Now we live in a small apartment with little or no privacy. I still have the chair I sat in – it’s just in the living room now. So, when either no one is up yet, or I manage to steal some time to myself, that’s where I sit and listen to God’s voice. Sometimes my husband and I discuss what the Lord has shown us – it’s amazing how He interweaves our separate devotions time into one message for both of us.

Im a complete gym rat and with my hectic schedule the one thing that always remained constant and consistent was my routine of going to the gym. Dear Sharon,

Today I didnt start out by doing my bible study and prayer like I always do instead its almost 7:00pm so im doing it right now. What a blessing your devotionals have been to me everyday. I’m sitting here in my livingroom just thanking and praising God for what he has done how he created this wonderful world we live in. And then I started to think to myself in other parts of the world life isnt so beauitful like it is here where I live. Some people have to wake up to battles that are going on around them fighting, bombings, people getting killed all around them; here I sit in my quiet livingroom with the AC humming away waiting for my dinner to get done. I live in an apartment complex with parklike setting lots of trees lots of birds singing you may here voices, a car starting up, people waking up starting there day. And to some people its not like that at all. So I really have to thank the good Lord that i’m not waking up to a war thats going on all around me, that i’m just sitting here in my quiet little livingroom safe and sound, and praying for those people who have to endure life like that everyday. God is so good…

Hi, Sharon – I’m with you girl-friend! Since my husband has been putting a balcony on the back of our place (we live out in the country), my favourite place to meet the Lord is sitting there as the sun rises with my Bible or devotional book and listening to the sounds of nature our wonderful Creator has made for us to enjoy! It inspires me to write poetry, as I sit in awe of God, admiring the green trees and other beautiful foliage! Being up that early is the greatest blessing of getting older, too!

  43. katina williams August 3, 2012 at 1:19 am #

Wow! This was amazing. I am reading this a bit later in the day. Nevertheless, this morning before the sun rose, I went out of the house to my car. Usually every morning I wake about 530 to spend time with God, right in my bedroom. However, this morning I wanted to be away from everything around the house and I sat out in the car and spent time with Him. I was blessed to see Venus and Jupiter out above us in the sky. I was so relaxing and rejuvenating, to see the sun actually rise.

I am grateful. God bless you!

My favourite place to meet with God is on the beach in my homeland of Barbados. Thank you for your devotions. They are very inspiring.

My favorite place to meet with God is at the Beach. I sit on the beautiful sand and marvel at the beauty of it all. The sky, the sun, the sand, the birds, the waves of the water. It all is breath taking for me. Yet, although God is always with me, there feels like an intense connection everytime I get in the water. In the water, I always feel his presence so heavy and while my mind may be a million miles away from God, I’m instantly compelled to give him reverence.

I so enjoy your messages. Thanks so much. One of my favorite places to connect with God is in my flower garden. You can’t help but appreciate God’s magnificent artistry when you look at all the intricacies of the flowers. My garden is a sanctuary. Love & blessings!

The kiss of the sun for pardon,
The song of the birds for mirth,–
One is nearer God’s heart in a garden
    Than anywhere else on earth.
